O2 UK deploys free AI-powered scam call protection for all customers

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that, following a successful trial earlier this autumn, they’ve now rolled out a free, AI-powered scam call protection service for all customers based on technology from existing partner Hiya. Over 3 million malicious calls a week are now expected to be blocked in real time from reaching customers’ phones.

Ofcom sets out “highly effective” UK age checks for Under 16s social media ban

The UK telecoms, media and internet content regulator, Ofcom, has today set out how they will define “highly effective” Age Verification systems. Such systems are set to become a mandatory requirement as part of the Government’s controversial move to introduce an online Social Media ban for children under the age of 16 – for use against the most popular platforms (Facebook, Instagram etc.).

Copper cable thieves strike Essex town and disrupt Openreach’s broadband

More than 2,000 metres of Openreach’s older copper broadband and phone cable has been stolen from around the Essex (England) town of South Woodham Ferrers, which is home to a population of c.16,000. The criminal activity is understood to have caused “significant disruption” to local telecoms services for homes and businesses.

Lodestar Networks launch cheap L2TP UK internet tunnel service

Communications provider Lodestar Networks, which normally specialises in building local UK community 4G mobile (calls and broadband) networks, has this week launched a L2TP (Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol) service from just £3.50 per month – giving you your own static IPv4 address without changing your existing broadband or mobile provider.

Telecoms provider Ogi reprimanded after cyber-attack exposed children’s info.

Telecoms and IT provider Ogi Networks Limited, which is closely linked altnet Ogi who recently deployed a full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to cover more than 118,000 premises across South Wales (inc. a small part of England), has been “reprimanded” by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) after a cyber-attack exposed children’s information.

Govt sets out new UK rules to protect subsea internet cables from sabotage

The UK Government (DCMS) has today published a new White Paper, which sets out their final proposals for a new criminal penalties regime (i.e. bigger fines and longer prison sentences), as well as new telecoms infrastructure security and resilience duties, to help tackle those who damage critial subsea infrastructure (CUI) essential for UK broadband access and trade.

The UK telecoms regulator has today opened a new investigation into communications provider Xtra Phones UK, which will assess whether the company has failed in its duty to ensure that phone numbers allocated to it are not being misused, including to perpetrate scams.

Ofcom fines Tismi £437,500 for failure to prevent misuse of UK phone numbers

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today fined telecoms provider Tismi (Tismi BV) £437,500 for failing to prevent misuse of its phone numbers by scammers. The move comes after their June 2025 decision, which directed the company to “block all calls and messages” sent to or from specific mobile numbers allocated to it by the regulator after they were “linked to serious fraud or misuse“ (this was implemented).

A criminal gang has caused a significant broadband and phone outage for thousands of customers on Openreach’s UK network around the large South Yorkshire (England) village of Thurnscoe. The problems occurred after the thieves damaged the local network while they were dragging the operator’s copper telecoms cables out of the ground.

Virgin Media O2 UK warns customers of rise in recruitment scams

Broadband and mobile operators Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have this morning warned customers that they’ve seen a rise in recruitment scams, which have now entered their top 10 list of the most reported scam types across their UK network. The warning comes as almost 1 million 16–24-year-olds are not in education, employment or training – making them prime targets for such scams.

Network kit manufacturer FRITZ!, which is a German developer of home networking products (e.g. FRITZ!Box routers are bundled by several UK broadband ISPs), has today informed ISPreview that they’ve begun to roll-out their latest FRITZ!OS 8.50 software update that includes various new features. Hopefully this will be less buggy than some prior updates.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today opened two separate investigations into cloud and VoIP phone providers Vonage (Vonage Business Limited) and Voxbone SA – here and here, which centres on a concern that telephone numbers held by the companies are being “misused, including to perpetrate scams“.

New study benchmarks Malware blocking by free third-party DNS providers

A new study has been published that attempts to benchmark the effectiveness of several popular and free third-party Domain Name Service (DNS) providers to see how effective they are at blocking 100 malware and phishing websites (whittled down from an original list of 41,000 to reduce the risk from false positives). The results make for an interesting read.

Alternative UK home broadband network Trooli launches 5Gbps speeds UPDATE2

Alternative network operator and broadband ISP Trooli, which has so far deployed their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 480,000 premises across parts of England and some of Scotland, has today announced a major speed boost with the launch of a new 5Gbps (5,000Mbps) symmetric speed package for consumers. The package is being supported by a new Wi-Fi 7 router.

Survey claims 32 percent of UK people can’t identify if a Wi-Fi network is secure

A new “nationally representative” survey of 3,000 UK adults, which was conducted by Censuswide during July 2026, has reported that 32% of respondents were not confident they could identify a secure public Wi-Fi network from a fake (spoofed) one. On the flip side, 73% of men did feel confident identifying secure Wi-Fi, compared with 64% of women.

Email users of broadband ISP BT suffer barrage of password reset messages UPDATE

Some customers of BT’s UK broadband packages, specifically those that also make use of their included Email platform, have recently begun complaining about receiving hundreds of unsolicited password reset messages (sometimes as many as 1,000 TXTs) – each containing a onetime four digit PIN code to verify their BTInternet mail account.
