Ruling by EU Court Adviser May Hamper UK Internet Snooping

The Advocate General for the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), Campos Sánchez-Bordona, has today issued a landmark legal “opinion” that could effectively limit the ability of national security agencies (e.g. GCHQ) to force internet providers (e.g. broadband ISPs) into the bulk retention of personal customer data.

A demand for Facebook and other companies to delay or cease plans for implementing end-to-end encryption across their internet messaging services, which was made by the UK, USA and Australian governments, has today prompted the European ISP Association (EuroISPA) to “oppose” any weakening of encryption.

Firefox Says – NO DNS Over HTTPS (DoH) by Default for UK

In a surprise twist Mozilla has informed the Government that they now have “no plans” to enable the DNS-over-HTTPS security feature by default for UK internet users in their popular Firefox website browser, at least not without “further engagement with public and private stakeholders.” Doh!

Google Chrome v77 Browser Breaks Netgear Router Logins

Anybody using the popular Google Chrome website browser, which since 10th September has been updated to its latest v77 release, should take note that if you own a Netgear and some other broadband routers then due to a bug you may be unable to login via the device’s web-based admin page (192.168.1.1).

ISP Association on the Risks of Brexit, DoH and UK Full Fibre Targets

Andrew Glover, Chair of the UK ISPA, has told ISPreview in a new interview that a no-deal Brexit could harm both the industry’s supply chain and access to a skilled workforce. Glover also warns that DNS over HTTPS (DoH) raises a “host of security concerns” and says “considerable regulatory change” is needed to hit full fibre targets.

A new survey of 2,000 British people by the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) has helped to shed new light on the reason why some people (18% of respondents) still choose NOT to use the internet. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the biggest reason turns out to be a simple “lack of interest” (69% of non-users now vs 82% in 2013).

The UK High Court has dismissed Liberty‘s legal challenge against the Government’s bulk data retention policy in its 2016 Investigatory Powers Act (IPAct), which is a mass surveillance approach that also catches innocent peoples communications data (i.e. phone, mobile and internet activity). A new YouGov survey of 1,017 UK adults, which was commissioned by NewsGuard and conducted between 27th June to 2nd July 2019, has found that 51% of respondents would trust their broadband ISP or mobile network operator more if they pro-actively alerted users as to the quality of a news website being accessed.
