EU Impose New Personal Data Rules on UK Phone and Internet Providers

The European Commission (EC) has this week implemented new rules to help telephone and broadband providers (ISP) know what to do when their customers’ personal data is either lost, stolen or otherwise compromised. But companies that encrypt your data won’t have to tell you if it’s been stolen.

Broadband providers BT and TalkTalk have adjusted their voluntary blocking of online child abuse websites by replacing the old generic error messages with a more descriptive warning, which shows to anybody whom attempts to access related internet pages.

The British Labour Party’s Shadow Culture Minister, Helen Goodman MP, yesterday used a debate in the House of Commons to call for all broadband ISPs to install internet censorship (filtering) systems by default because, she claimed, it was a “near-impossible task for many” people to download their own Parental Control solutions. BT, Sky Broadband (BSkyB) and Virgin Media have all now confirmed that they plan to join TalkTalk (HomeSafe) in launching an automatic network level filtering service in the UK, which would block access to websites that contain “adult” content.

40% of UK Adults Say ISPs are Responsible for Protecting their Personal Info

A new study conducted by Experian Consumer Services, which surveyed 2,249 internet using UK adults, has found that 40% believe the main responsibility for protecting identity and personal information online rests with service providers (broadband ISPs, mobile operators, banks etc.) and not themselves.

UPD ENISA Criticise UK ISPs for Failing to Tackle 300Gbps DDoS Attack

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) has criticised ISPs in the UK and Europe for failing to implement measures that could have helped to tackle one of the biggest Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks ever seen, which hit anti-spam group Spamhaus in March 2013 and impacted global internet traffic.
