Ofcom has today published a final statement on their recent UK Wholesale Local Access Market Review (WLAMR), which is broadly unchanged from last month’s major announcement (here) but there has been a tweak to wholesale FTTC “fibre broadband” pricing for UK ISPs.

As promised the Government has today set out their chosen design for the new Universal Service Obligation (USO), which pledges to give everybody in the United Kingdom the “legal right” to request a 10Mbps+ capable “high speed broadband” connection from 2020, but challenges remain.

A new uSwitch.com survey, which was conducted with 1,000 UK parents of children aged 5-18, has claimed that 15% of respondents (allegedly equivalent to around 1.2 million children) think slow home internet connection speeds are “negatively impacting their child’s education.”

A meeting of the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association has named the four suppliers that are bidding on Scotland’s R100 project, which aspires to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) available to 100% of the country by the end of 2021 (March 2022 as a financial year).

A new study of broadband ISP growth has confirmed the unsurprising news that the UK is in a slowdown. The market is now home to a total of 26,265,000 lines but only 203800 were added in Q4 2017, which compares with 241900 in Q4 2016, 255200 in Q4 2015 and 339400 three years ago.

The coverage of UK “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks may be growing but a new report from Rural England, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and Amazon, which examines how rural businesses use digital technologies, has warned that slow take-up of the service is also holding them back.

The telecoms regulator has today completed several wholesale market reviews, which among other things will force Openreach (BT) to adopt stiffer Quality of Service standards (installations and repairs), open up their cable ducts to rival ISPs and introduce a big price cut on 40Mbps FTTC broadband lines.

The Government’s Environment Secretary, Michael Gove MP, has told a meeting of UK farmers that fast broadband and 4G mobile coverage remains “patchy and poor in many areas” and that true universal coverage could be “paid for by the money we no longer have to give to the EU.”

The incumbent telecoms operator for Hull in East Yorkshire, KCOM, has today confirmed that more people on their network are now using their new Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband lines than older copper (ADSL) based connections for the first time.

BT has released their latest results to the end of 2017 (Q4 calendar), which saw their retail UK broadband ISP base add 35K subscribers to total 9,342,000 (vs +22K in Q3). Meanwhile their FTTP and G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services reached 886,000 premises (up from 770K).

Completed on time. The Government has today confirmed that an estimated 95% of the United Kingdom can now access a 24Mbps+ capable fixed line “superfast broadband” network as a result of their national £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK programme, but many gaps remain.

In an unsurprising development the Highlands and Islands Enterprise has announced that their Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative, which provided public funding to help setup new alternative broadband networks in very remote rural areas, is coming to an end.

The Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, which touts itself as being the voice of local businesses in that corner of South East England, has called on the UK Government to deliver 10 times faster broadband speeds than those being pledged as part of the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for 2020.
