New customers looking to take a home broadband package or bundle from UK ISP Virgin Media (O2) may like to know that the service provider will today be moving from 18-month minimum term contracts to longer 24-month terms. The change does not impact existing customers, at least it won’t until you need to upgrade or re-contract.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has posted an update on their investigation into the performance of the new consumer broadband and phone switching system (One Touch Switching). This found no major problems with the biggest ISPs but did warn that some providers on Openreach’s network were using an “alternative switching method“, which they said must stop.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that – over the past 12-months – they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G mobile services across “over” 3,000 postcodes in the city of Glasgow (Scotland), which should bring “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability to the area.

The annual Broadband Genie 2025 Awards survey has this morning named UK ISP Plusnet as the “Best Broadband Provider” of the year, while a variety of other internet service providers also scooped various other awards across several different categories.

Network operator nexfibre, which is working alongside Virgin Media to deploy a new 10Gbps full fibre broadband (FTTP) network across millions of UK premises (c.2.2m have already been built), has told ISPreview that they “remain focused on enabling as many ISPs as possible“. This came after some of ISPreview’s sources indicated that their wholesale plans seem to have stalled.

The boss of Liberty Global (Mike Fries), one of the parents behind UK broadband provider Virgin Media (O2) and associated network builder nexfibre, has reportedly claimed that the UK Government’s Business Secretary, Jonathan Reynolds MP, expressed that he was “anxious” for them to step in and rescue struggling alternative networks.

Broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has this morning claimed, as part of a new online survey conducted by Strand Partners, that 48% of UK pensioners are still unaware of the social tariffs that can offer “significant cost savings” to those on state benefits, such as Pension Credit, Universal Credit and others.

Network operator CityFibre, which has so far deployed their gigabit-capable full fibre broadband (FTTP) lines to cover 4.3 million UK premises (RFS), have said that recent newspaper “speculation” around the possibility of the business being acquired by Virgin Media (O2) are “unfounded“. The operator added that they were now close to securing a much-needed financing deal.

The UK government has today hailed the start of a new national campaign, funded by broadband giants BT and Virgin Media, which aims to help support and encourage vulnerable people in their efforts to switch from legacy phone lines to new digital (IP / VoIP based) networks before the deadline.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has this morning revealed that a total of 50 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across England (9 masts), Wales (28) and Scotland (13) as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But 50 more will follow by March 2026.

Ofcom has today published their 2025 study of UK broadband, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, fault repairs, compensation and install times for the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%) and Plusnet (BT) secured the highest (91%).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today informed ISPreview that they’ve finally resolved a nasty security issue with their 4G based Voice-over-LTE service (VoLTE or 4G Calling), which effectively made it possible for customers of the operator’s network to have their location tracked by almost anybody with access to their mobile number.
