O2 UK Follows Vodafone into Testing an OpenRAN Network

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced its own plans for an Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN), which works to standardise the design and functionality of mobile network (3G, 4G or 5G) hardware and software (i.e. making network deployments more cost effective). Vodafone also plans O-RAN trials (here) in rural areas.

Vodafone UK Confirm 1Gbps FTTH Network Live in Cambridge

UK ISP Vodafone has today finally confirmed our report from last month (here), which revealed that their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network with Cityfibre had gone live in the city of Cambridge. The deployment is costing £20m and will ultimately cover around 60,000 local premises.

EE and Vodafone Come Top of New 2020 UK Mobile Benchmark

Mobile operators EE and Vodafone have today come top in umlaut‘s (formerly P3) annual 2019 UK Mobile Network Test, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 3G and 4G (voice and data / broadband) services across 21 cities, 29 towns and along 10,700km of major roads.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their new ultrafast 5G data (mobile broadband) network has now gone live in busy areas around the cities of Belfast, Edinburgh and Leeds, as well as the towns of Cheadle, Rochdale and Stockport around Greater Manchester. EE UK Joins 4G Mobile Pilot on the London Underground Network

As expected EE (BT) has today announced that they will next year be joining O2, Vodafone and Transport for London (TfL) to help pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains).

RED Warning Given to Cityfibre’s FTTH Build in Milton Keynes

The Milton Keynes Council has issued a “red warning” against Cityfibre’s £40m roll-out of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network – supported by ISP partner Vodafone UK, which is due to the level of complaints being made against the provider and inspectors identifying “poor practise” in their work.
