Network access provider Openreach (BT) has made progress on their deal with social housing provider Wolverhampton Homes in the West Midlands (England), which will enable them to extend their 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to cover thousands of flats and apartments across the city.

Network analyst firm Streetwave is working with the River Severn Partnership Advanced Wireless Innovation Region (RSPAWIR) to conduct what they’re called the “largest mobile coverage survey ever conducted in the UK“. This uses bin lorries to survey the coverage and speed of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks across 33 West Midlands (England) and Wales councils.

Network operator and UK ISP Brsk, which now covers 600,000 premises passed across England via their full fibre network and is in the process of being merged into Netomnia (here), has today revealed that they’ve also extended their coverage to 100,000 premises across the West Midlands (i.e. South Birmingham and The Black Country).

Broadband ISP Exascale, which is building a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to several thousand premises – mostly around Telford and Wrekin, has revealed that several core Dark Fibre cables – between Telford and Wolverhampton – were cut this week in what appears to have been a targeted attack by vandals.

Network operator CityFibre has revealed that their £50m project to deploy a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the West Midland’s city of Wolverhampton, which began all the way back in July 2020 (here), has now covered over 90,000 premises (homes and businesses).

A new alternative network operator and ISP called UrFibre (UrSolutions) has been spotted deploying a new 2Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which is currently only targetting homes and businesses in the West Midland’s (England) market town of Dudley.

Broadband ISP and network operator Brsk, which has so far built their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 266,000 UK premises – mostly around the Midlands (rollout plan), has today secured an “additional” £156m debt investment from funds managed by existing investor Ares.

Residents in the West Midland’s city of Wolverhampton have been warned by the local city council to be on the lookout for doorstep scammers, some of which have recently been posing as council employees in an attempt to entice people to switch their ISP for free broadband.

Shropshire-based UK ISP and alternative broadband provider Exascale has today provided ISPreview with an update on the latest locations to benefit from their rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the West Midlands. The provider has also changed the Optical Network Terminals (ONT) they use.

Broadband ISP BT has this morning confirmed that they’ve begun the expected region-by-region roll out of their Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based home phone service, Digital Voice, in the East Midlands of England. Once completed, the deployment will next be extended to Yorkshire & Humberside, and then Northern Ireland.

A new report from telecoms analyst firm Umlaut, which analysed geographic 5G mobile coverage across the UK’s Combined Authority areas, has identified the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) region as being the best connected in the UK, with 65% of locations having access from at least one operator.

The Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) in England has been chosen to lead a new £8m “GigaHubs” project that will rollout a gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to reach a total of more than 350 public buildings (schools, council offices, hospitals etc.) across the Midlands.
