Sometimes marketing can be misleading (e.g. calling FTTC or cable lines “fibre optic”) and the same could perhaps be said of 6G Internet, which has just launched a new wireless broadband network in Blackburn (Lancashire, England) and for added confusion fun they’re calling the technology “Air Fibre” (they’re not the first to use that).

Cable operator Virgin Media Business confirms that it has completed the build of their new “super-fast” public wifi wireless Internet hotspot service in the centre of Birmingham, which covers around 2.5 square miles of the city and offers “no usage limits“.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP ThinkingWISP, which was first established in 2011 as a local partnership between InTouch Systems, the Norfolk Rural Community Council and AF Affinity to improve Internet access around rural Norfolk and some parts of Suffolk in England, have confirmed plans to expand their existing network.

Public WiFi Hotspot operator The Cloud (BSkyB) has entered into a new partnership with the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board (ABM) that has already resulted in a free wireless internet service being deployed across several of the groups hospitals in Wales.

Welsh wireless broadband ISP ResQ (ResQNet) has apologised to customers after admitting that a mix of “technical issues” and becoming a “victim of our own success” (i.e. not enough capacity to meet demand) had contributed towards a series performance woes (slow service speeds) in rural areas.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has banned a TV advert for BT’s HomeHub broadband ISP router after it caused confusion over which household devices would cause interference on a wifi wireless network (the router’s smart wireless technology is designed to mitigate this).

The Diocese of Chelmsford has selected local wireless ISP County Broadband to help fill in some of the Internet slowspots and notspots around Essex (England) by allowing them to build a new 32Mbps (Megabits per second) capable network via local churches.

A joint team of German researchers based out of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics (IAF) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have achieved a world record after they successfully completed a 100Gbps (Gigabits per second) data transmission over a wireless radio network at 237.5GHz. The next target is 1Tbps!

AB Internet has told ISPreview.co.uk, as part of our exclusive interview, that the Valuation Office Agency’s review of how its business rates can be applied to fixed wireless networks could result in a “whole segment of society” being “digitally marooned“. The ISP also warned against an “all roads must lead to fibre” approach to broadband.

The UK telecoms regulator has today named around 20 organisations, which include the likes of BT, Neul and Microsoft, that will be taking part in its 6 month pilot of White Space (IEEE 802.22) wireless broadband technology; this intelligently harnesses the unused spectrum gaps that exist between Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) channels.

The Government’s Department for Transport has said it plans to make a new generation of “high speed” Mobile Broadband based Internet access services available to 70% of train commuters by 2019, which will focus on eradicating the existing networks many mobile signal “not spots” and boost customer speeds up to 50Mbps.
