  • Cost
    Monthly fee charged for the listed package, usually including VAT @ 17.5%.

  • DL (Download) Speed
    Maximum possible download (Internet to your computer) speed measured in Megabits (Mbps) or Kilobits (Kbps) per second (actual speed varies).

  • UP (Upload) Speed
    Maximum possible upload (your computer to Internet) speed measured in Megabits (Mbps) or Kilobits (Kbps) per second (actual speed varies).

  • Anti-Virus
    Anti-Virus e-mail protection and filtering.

  • Anti-SPAM
    Anti-SPAM junk e-mail protection and filtering.

  • Usage Allowance (Data Cap)
    The maximum "suggested" amount of data (GigaBytes) you can download per month (FUP = Fair Usage Policy / Blank field = no cap or undefined restriction).

  • Contract
    The length of time, in months, you commit to a service before you can leave.

  • Extra Usage
    The cost of each additional GigaByte downloaded (above the usage/data cap allowance).

  • Static IP
    Static Internet Protocol address, an online ID that never changes.

  • New Connection Fee
    Standard charge made when joining an ISP; note that this usually only applies where you have not had a broadband provider before.

  • Type
    Whether the ISP is Cable or DSL (ADSL) based.

  • E-Mail
    Electronic mail account.

  • Webspace
    Online file storage space for a personal website (MB = MegaBytes).

  • Newsgroup (Usenet)
    Specialised public discussion groups support.

  • Included VoIP / Voice Calls
    Voice over Internet Protocol is a method of transferring telephone calls over the Internet (cheaper). Some ISP's also include free non-VoIP voice line calls.

  • Included Connection Hardware
    Included "FREE" hardware (modems, routers etc.) necessary to get you connected.

  • Domain Hosting
    Can the provided webspace host a domain?

  • MySQL Database
    More advanced webspace may give you access to MySQL, which is essential for many modern website applications.

  • Webmail
    Website based access to your e-mail account.

  • Supplier(s)
    Companies that supply the ISP with its broadband links.

  • Ofcom ADR
    Lists the name of an ISP’s Ofcom approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme for handling customer complaints.

  • ISPA Member
    Is the ISP a member of the UK Internet Service Providers Association?
