Three UK Appoints New Chief Network Officer, Iain Milligan

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that their existing Chief Network Officer (CNO), Carlo Melis, is to be replaced by Iain Milligan next month. Carlo is understood to be returning to his native Italy to become Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Three’s sister company, Wind Tre.

Iain is certainly no stranger to the operator and is currently their Director of Service Operations and Assurance, after having first joined the company in October 2005. But his new role will see him take on responsibility for the performance of Three’s £2bn+ network investment and the continuing rollout of their 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) networks.

In addition, he will oversee the switch off of Three’s 3G network by the end of 2024, with related spectrum resources being redirected to boost both 4G and 5G services.

David Hennessy, CTO of Three UK and Three Ireland, said:

“With seventeen years of experience at Three, Iain’s understanding of the company and its operations will drive the next stage of our network development as we continue the rollout of the UK’s fastest 5G network and build an even better 4G network.

I want to thank Carlo for his work in developing Three’s network and I wish him the best of luck in his new role with our sister company, Wind Tre.”

Once again, we should point out that Three UK’s “fastest 5G network” claim only reflects download speeds, not uploads or latency times, where they tend to trail Vodafone and EE a little.

Will they be renamed to 4 or 5 then?

There is still a long way to go before Three switch off the 3g network. The construction of the masts is often blocked by the community and without it, Three will not have a good quality 4g and 5g network.
