We’ve just completed another big update sweep of the UK ISP Listings database and have opted to add a new category for multi-gigabit broadband packages, which at present is only listing the fastest package available from each provider up to a maximum of 10Gbps and above the 1Gbps tiers.
At present the new section only lists a few providers (e.g. B4RN, CommunityFibre, EE, Fibrus, Lothian Broadband, Yayzi Broadband, YouFibre and Zzoomm) and packages, which is because multi-gigabit plans for consumers aren’t very common. But we expect that to change next year as more ISPs adopt Openreach’s 1.8Gbps and CityFibre’s 2Gbps+ tiers, not to mention the expected launch of Virgin Media’s 2Gbps product.
The reality today is that home users don’t really NEED multi-gigabit plans, and you’d struggle to make full use of such speeds in the real-world (example caveats), so they’re very much a luxury item. But some people do demand the fastest option they can get and, as always with such things, over time multi-gigabit services will eventually become the daily normal.
