Alternative broadband ISP Connexin, which is currently aiming to deploy a new full fibre (FTTP) network across 500,000 premises in East Yorkshire and beyond (England), has today become one of the UK’s fastest residential providers with the launch of a new 5Gbps (symmetric speed) package called “Fibre 5000“.

The premium package is being aimed at “heavy internet users … [with] exceptionally high data demands“, such as content creators and video professionals, as well as businesses or individuals with staggering amounts of data who rely on cloud services for their data storage, computing or backups etc.

NOTE: Connexin is currently backed by an investment of £80m from PATRIZIA.

The new Fibre 5000 broadband package includes a “freeu6T (Calix) router, which boasts a 10Gbps capable LAN and WAN port to “futureproof the needs of the most demanding user and delivers the ultimate Wi-Fi experience for gaming, streaming and data transfers with blazing speeds.” But sadly, it’s not a WiFi 7 device.

The package itself costs £124.99 per month for 24-months (£149.99 thereafter) and includes “free” installation, which at this price puts it more into the territory of a business style service.

Shadi Halliwell, MD of Consumer at Connexin, said:

“We are delighted to offer Hull the fastest broadband speeds available in our region and one of the fastest in the UK. As technology continues to evolve, we will see a persistent increase in data consumption and the need for higher broadband speeds. By investing in ultra-fast broadband today, we are helping home and business users prepare for tomorrow’s ever-increasing demands. Fibre 5000 will give individuals a brilliant opportunity to futureproof their homes and businesses.”

At present we don’t know exactly how many premises Connexin has covered with their network, but the majority of it is in Hull where their fibre optic lines compete with the likes of KCOM, Grain and MS3. However, this is not the fastest consumer available broadband package in the UK, since for that honour we’d have to look at the likes of B4RN and YouFibre (Netomnia), which have 8-10Gbps class packages.

If I’m reading the spec sheet correctly the routers offered have 10/100/1000 LAN connections which seems short sighted. You can share your 5 Gbps across your network but your pc will top out at 1 Gbps (!). 2.5Gbps ports seem to be commonplace on motherboards these days so I think I’d be disappointed with that router offering. (I’m always disappointed with the router offering, I want to use my own).

It also has a 10GE WAN interface and a single port of multi-rate
      100/1000/2500/5000/10000 for the LAN.

There still aren’t many routers with multiple 2.5G LAN ports that I’m aware of (let alone anything faster). I’m hoping these will become more common soon. Not that it really matters to me yet, with my fibre desert 66/19Mbps VDSL connection!

Unmanaged switch with a pair of 10G SFP+ ports and 4 2.5 GbE copper ports for £50, 8 x 2.5 GbE port version is £80. A 10 GbE port for a single faster host, one for connecting to the router and then the 4 or 8 to the LAN.

As noted previously CityFibre have restarted construction in your city. Chequers and Saintbridge are seeing spine work. Repeating the same complaints here is unlikely to expedite the process or elicit sympathy, especially when complaining about using 67/19 VDSL while having 1100/100 cable available.

Good move but £125 a month is bonkers.

    1. Avatar photo K says:

Not really. Ethernet connections at 100meg used to be more expensive than that for business users. For a 5gbit network connection it would easily be worth it if you use it to the full.

    2. Avatar photo Witcher says:

What did you mean by ‘use it to the full’?

  3. Avatar photo Cognizant says:

If one could use all their own equipment that’d be fine. 10Gbps networking is not that expensive. If you are willing to be spending £125 a month for two years then a few hundred pound on 10Gbps switches and equipment will be nothing.

mikrotik do loads of routers with MG ports, 2.5g/5g/10g, Asus offer a lot of mg mixed port routers too.

Literally no demand for this at all.

All of these altnets competing for landgrab are quickly running out of ideas…

There will be a few geeks who will get excited by this. Effectively it’s a form of patronage: they are making a donation to subsidise the network operator. And it gets free publicity.

Everyone else can think of better things to spend the money on.
