Internet retail giant Amazon has confirmed that its modestly popular ad-supported Freevee service, which has been running for around 5 years and is described on app stores (Android/iOS) as being a “premium free streaming service“, is set to be completely shut down in August 2025.
Doubts began to be cast over the future of the service earlier last year, after Amazon somewhat controversially introduced an ad-supported tier for their paid ‘Prime’ video streaming service, which appeared to conflict with the focus of Freevee. The plan to close it was then confirmed in November 2024, albeit without a solid date being given.
Since then, a growing amount of Freevee’s content has been gradually returned to Prime (a lot of it first premiered on Prime before later being moved to Freevee) and that process will complete once the old service is finally discontinued next month.

People who use the Freevee app are now being presented with the following statement: “Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and live TV. The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite free originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.”

Never heard about it.
I’d love to see the internal emails on Freevee. IMO it was just a scam to bring in ad supported content by the back door. The Prime Video app has Freevee content just there mixed in with everything else. I have nothing against ad supported tiers as long as there’s an ad-free tier and it’s really ad-free. If I have to watch ads for something I don’t even want to see it in the app it should be in its own app.
Well that was short lived. I use it a fair bit and have no issue with the ads personally. It offers some good content. Oh well.
I had never heard of it, but given almost all content on prime seems to either need a 3rd party service or pay per view, I guess this wa sa cheap way to bulk up the inclusive shows.
I never used it and as someone who pays for Prime and now ad free, too, I found it annoying when Amazon tried pushing Freevee in their own app.
It appears that Amazon are trying to turn Prime Video into the next Google TV with all the extra “channels” you can pay extra for in their app rather than separately.
I thought it was already gone anyways tbh and just was Prime Video Free with Ads now.
Can’t say there’s much on Freevee/Free with Ads I’ve ever watched, honestly you’re so much better just getting a regular Prime Video subscription if you just want to watch films. Wasn’t Neighbours supposed to be on Freevee though, what happened to that?
