UK ISP Exascale, which has built their own gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) network to a few thousand premises in parts of Shropshire (Telford and Wrekin) and also sells packages via other network operators (CityFibre), have announced that they’ll reduce their broadband prices by £3 (monthly) for UK customers that bring their own router. But that’s not the only change.
At present the broadband provider’s packages already include a Wi-Fi 7 router by default on their 24-month contract terms, as well as free installation. But now, after choosing your package, you can alternatively pick to use your own router instead and benefit from a £3 (monthly) discount in the process.
None of this is a new idea and a number of other providers already offer cheaper packages when using your existing router, although Exascale’s approach does make the price difference much clearer. But naturally this is more for advanced users who are already comfortable messing around in their VLAN and DHCP-capable router’s admin interface to adapt to a different broadband line.

According to Exascale’s blog post, the provider has also announced a second update to its order journey, which gives customers greater flexibility when arranging their installation. In short, customers placing a new order can now choose an available installation appointment from seven days ahead through to 90 days in advance, providing a much wider window to find a date that works around their schedule.
Thomas Bibb, CEO of Exascale, said:
“We want to make getting connected with Exascale as straightforward and flexible as possible. Giving customers the ability to plan their installation up to 90 days ahead means they can choose a date that genuinely works for them.
We also know that plenty of our customers already have great networking equipment of their own. If you’ve invested in a router you’re happy with, there’s no reason we should insist on sending you another one. Our new £3 monthly discount means customers who bring their own compatible router get a fairer price and there’s one less piece of unused kit gathering dust in the cupboard.”

This will only be worthwhile for a limited number of people that don’t require technical support it’s a gimmick headline, albeit a good idea in the making if more generous and expanded.
