A two year legal battle between BT and several major ISPs has finally ended with Ofcom forcing the national UK telecoms operator to pay a fine of £94,823,000 after it was found to have overcharged the broadband providers for Backhaul Extension Services (BES) between 2004/6 and 2011.

BT and the Suffolk County Council (SCC) have today signed a new £40 million contract that will use government state aid from the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) office to help make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services available to 85-90% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015 (but it use to be June 2015).

Welshpool-based ISP eXwavia has announced plans to expand the reach of its existing superfast wireless broadband network to cover over 27,000 households and 3,000 businesses in Powys (Wales, United Kingdom) by the end of January 2013.

BT and the Norfolk County Council (NCC) have today signed a new £41 million contract, which will see a mix of public and private money being used to help make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP services reach “more than” 80% of local homes and businesses by autumn 2015 (i.e. below the UK’s national target of at least 90%).

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has today failed in its Court of Appeal bid to block Golden Eye International (GEIL), a firm that holds numerous copyrights for adult films (e.g. Ben Dover), from potentially sending thousands more internet piracy settlement letters to customers of UK ISP O2 (BE Broadband).

Business ISP Fluidata has completed a £2.5 million core network upgrade “on time and on budget“, which among other things will massively boost the capacity of its new Service Exchange Platform (SEP). The SEP makes it easier for a range of ISPs to reach rural premises through a specially aggregated open access wholesale network.

Customers of Tesco’s fixed line “unlimited” broadband and phone services may be displeased to learn that they’re about to become the latest to be hit by a price hike. The worst part is that customers have only been given 10 days to decide and those who refuse will have to switch.. at Christmas!

Commuters who travel on the East Midlands Train (Stagecoach Group) service will be pleased to learn that the operator has teamed-up with The Cloud (BSkyB) to roll-out a free wireless internet (WiFi) service for rail passengers across 30 of its stations including major hubs like Nottingham, Sheffield, Derby and Leicester.

The European Commission (EC) has today adopted revised guidelines on the use of public funding to help deploy “super-fast” broadband (30Mbps+) ISP services to everybody in the EU by 2020. The updated “rules” support a technologically neutral approach and include a greater focus on funding for “ultra-fast” (100Mbps+) services in urban areas.

Gigaclear has announced plans to upgrade its Rutland Telecom managed network in the rural market town of Uppingham (Leicestershire) with a new 1Gpbs (Gigabits per second) capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) service, which will be priced from £37 per month.

The European Union (EU27) has released its latest annual ‘Internet use in households and by individuals in 2012‘ report, which found that 76% of EU households now have internet access (up from 66% in 2009) and 72% of EU homes connect via broadband (up from just 57% in 2009).

Internet provider BE Broadband has been forced to apologise after the ISPs parent operator O2 “mistakenly” bombarded some of their UK customers with an unsolicited email advert (SPAM) for a Christmas mobile phone deal.
