Project Gigabit BDUK Funded Digital UK Broadband Map

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has released their May 2026 update on the delivery progress of contracts awarded under their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme. The update reveals that some 256,680 contracted premises (up from 250,000 in April 2026) have so far been covered out of a planned total of 837,340 (31% complete).

The High Court has granted rights holders, such as Columbia Pictures and others, more flexibility to require the UK’s major broadband ISPs (e.g. BT, EE, Plusnet, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk) to block customers from accessing websites that have been found to facilitate internet copyright infringement (piracy).

One of the country’s largest alternative networks, CityFibre, has announced that they’ve reached an agreement with the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency to “re-scope” the contracts they hold under the Project Gigabit broadband roll-out programme due to the “accelerated rollout of commercially funded full fibre” across their contracted areas.

Broadband and mobile providers Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have changed their plans for the previously proposed merger of their respective customer community forums. The complexity of the challenge means that they will now focus on reintroducing the two communities separately, at least at first.

Canadian investment firm Northleaf Capital Partners, which backs alternative rural UK broadband ISP Quickline, has reportedly expressed an interest in acquiring KCOM, the incumbent broadband and phone provider for Hull, from Australian investment group Macquarie. But any deal is likely to see Northleaf pay less than the £627m Macquarie did to buy the incumbent.

Internet and web hosting provider Freeola has introduced a special offer on their 12-month minimum term contracts for customers joining in areas covered by Freedom Fibre (FreedomTruespeed Group) or Trooli’s full fibre broadband networks, which discounts the price by between £8 and £10 per month.

A small portion of consumers connected via ISPs on CityFibre’s national UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband network, specifically some of those with a cream white coloured Nokia Optical Network Terminal (ONT) on their interior walls, are currently known to be suffering from a bug that causes a significant drop in upload speeds.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with Virgin Media (they harness the same build teams), has today revealed another batch of seven locations across the United Kingdom – reflecting a total investment of £12.2m and 76,600 premises passed – that will benefit from an upgrade to their latest full fibre (FTTP – XGS-PON) broadband tech.

A growing amount of evidence seems to be suggesting that SpaceX may be developing a new and more rugged mini dish (terminal) for their Starlink broadband service which, as well as being tougher, may also feature a built-in battery and USB-C charging port for power (the current mini dish requires an adapter for such access).

Alternative rural broadband provider Wildanet, which is building a new 2Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) network across rural parts of South West England, has today announced that they’re now deploying to 2,318 premises across Bude, Stratton and surrounding villages including Hersham, Grimscott and Marhamchurch in Cornwall.

Business cloud, IT and telecoms provider Onecom, which is backed by private equity firm LDC, has today become the latest provider to sign a deal that will enable them to harness AllPoints Fibre Networks‘ (APFN) aggregated wholesale platform (aquila) of full fibre broadband networks. Customers of the ISP will thus gain access to an expanded range of high-speed connectivity services.

Community Fibre 2025 engineers sitting down

One of the UK’s largest alternative network operators, CommunityFibre, has today reported their annual accounts to the end of 2025, which reveals that revenues jumped 48% in the year to £113m and adjusted EBITDA surged by 530% to £50m. But the biggest news is that they’re resuming the build of their 5Gbps FTTP broadband network, targeting “beyond” 2 million premises by 2028-2029.

Digital entertainment platform Netgem TV has today announced that they’ve added a bunch of new cloud games and FAST TV channels to their UltraHD (4K) IPTV box – PLEIO, which already includes support for the UK’s newest broadband-based live TV streaming service (Freely).

The BT Group has published their H2 FY26 biannual results, which saw total half year revenues of £9,840m (up from £9,806m in H1) and another quarterly UK decline in Openreach’s broadband lines of -203k (down from -210k in Q3 FY26) – full year losses totalled 825k. But the network operator still grew their full fibre (FTTP) coverage by 2.608 million premises in H2 (vs 2.23m in H1) to total 23m.

Network operator Openreach (BT) and existing charity partner Crimestoppers have today announced that they’ve joined forces with a global leader in metal recycling, EMR, to help combat the rising tide of copper telecoms cable theft on their national broadband and phone network. Total Metal Theft is said to have costed the UK economy £4.3bn in the past decade.
