Mobile operator Vodafone UK has launched a new offer that gives 5 times more data (mobile broadband) alongside their various 30 day Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) based SIM Only bundles. For example, their entry-level £10 bundle now comes with 15GB of data (up from 3GB), as well as unlimited texts and 250 minutes of calls.

Mobile network operators including EE (BT), O2, Three UK and Vodafone have today collaborated to launch a new service called NumberVerify (NV), which is a new consumer safety solution that aims to make it both easier and more secure to authenticate a user’s identity for online transactions.

Northern Ireland’s Department for the Economy (DfE) has today confirmed what we first revealed in September (here), which is that alternative network ISP Fibrus have secure the £165m Project Stratum contract and will be extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage to 76,000+ extra rural premises by March 2024.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) and Cambridge spin-out Nu-Quantum today claim to have launched a “world-first trial” of end-to-end quantum-secured communications for the new generation of ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) networks, which is being called AIRQKD (Air Quantum Key Distribution).

UK ISP TalkTalk Business has today announced the launch of their new “Business Full Fibre” (FTTP) and “Business Ultrafast Fibre” (G.fast) broadband products for small and medium sized businesses, which at present are both supplied via Openreach’s national network (although they’ll soon be offering FTTP from Cityfibre too).

Leicester-based ISP Gigabit Networks, which works alongside Cityfibre to supply “full fibre” style Ethernet services to businesses across the Midlands, has today announced the acquisition of Skyline Wireless – a telecoms and VoIP provider that predominantly covers the East of England – for an undisclosed sum.

UK ISP Virgin Media Business has today signed a new multi-year public sector contract with Falkirk Council in Scotland, which among other things will see additional bandwidth and WiFi improvements (coverage, speed and security) being supplied to 58 local schools.

Councillors in the East Midlands (England) town of Northampton claim to be receiving “numerous complaints” from locals about the quality of Cityfibre’s street works, which reflect an investment of £40m to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network for homes and businesses.

A new study from consulting and research firm Analysys Mason has estimated that the new generation of ultrafast 5G based (mobile broadband) networks, which are currently being deployed by Three UK, Vodafone, EE (BT) and O2, could deliver £14.8bn in economic growth to the UK between 2025-2040 (at a cost of c.£3bn).

Broadband ISP BT appears to have begun informing customers about a “small” forthcoming change to their new Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) style ‘Digital Voice’ service (often supplied alongside FTTP or SOGEA based hybrid fibre packages), which will change how you dial when calling a local number.

European space operator Eutelsat has today confirmed that their new all-electric (propulsion) broadband satellite, KONNECT, which was launched into Geostationary Orbit (7° East) around the Earth in January 2020 (here), has finally entered into commercial service and should soon be available from ISPs in the UK and EU.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK have published their latest results to the end of September 2020 (financial Q2 FY21), which saw their fixed broadband base top 838,000 customers (up by +45k in the quarter vs +42K in the previous quarter), while their mobile base declined to 17,380,000 (down by -200k).

The first 2,000 homes in the Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent can now access one of the UK’s first part-publicly-owned open access Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks, which is being deployed under a £19.2m partnership between the city council and Swedish operator VXFIBER (inc. subsidiary LilaConnect).
