Once again the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has today whacked broadband ISP TalkTalk with a £100,000 fine, which comes after several accounts at their outsourced Wipro call centre in India were used to access the personal data of 21,000 customers.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has today unveiled a bunch of new measures that are aimed at tackling parts of the city that suffer from slow and unreliable broadband or mobile connectivity “not spots“, such as those that exist around parts of Rotherhithe, Westminster and the central City of London.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has warned that it is “legally questionable” for BT to recover up to £600m of the costs incurred for their proposed 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation deployment by extracting the money via charges for products providing access to Openreach’s local access networks.

The Hampshire County Council in England has allocated £1 million to help fund and support local communities that will not benefit from the regional roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks. Instead the communities can use the funding to help build an alternative, but there’s a catch.

The problem of advertised vs real-world broadband performance expectations has been given new ammunition by consumer magazine Which? today. A study conducted by the group found that the overall speeds recorded in internet speedtests were only 58% of the speed that users were expecting to get.

The firm behind the Speedtest.net service, Ookla, has reintroduced a monthly country ranking of global mobile and fixed broadband speeds. In their first report we find the United Kingdom ranked 24th fastest in the world with an average download of 49.22Mbps (fixed) and 25.83Mbps (mobile).

Residents of the Grand Eagles holiday park in Perthshire (Scotland) have claimed that Openreach holds a virtual “monopoly” after they accused the operator of trying to “extort” £3,500 per property from home owners, who aren’t covered by the current Universal Service Obligation.

Ofcom has today revised their Wholesale Local Access (WLA) charge controls in order to show how their planned broadband / FTTC price reductions could be impacted by BT’s voluntary proposal to spend £450m to £600m on the roll-out of a 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation.

Here we go again. Mobile operator Three UK has issued a formal letter before action to Ofcom, which threatens the regulator with a Judicial Review unless they change the rules of their forthcoming 4G and 5G radio spectrum auction in order to more aggressively curb EE’s (BT) dominance.

The Scottish Government has issued a letter to the UK’s Department for Digital (DCMS) that warns against accepting BT’s proposed investment of up to £600m to deploy a new 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation for broadband, which they fear could extend BT’s “monopoly position in rural areas.”

The UK telecoms regulator has hit KCOM, the incumbent telecoms and broadband provider for Hull in East Yorkshire, with a fine of £900,000 after “a serious weakness” in their network resulted in 74 calls to the emergency services failing after a BT telephone exchange in York flooded during Storm Eva.

Wireless infrastructure builder Arqiva has signed their 12th London Borough street furniture concession contract, which gives them exclusive access rights to street furniture across Lambeth. As a result around 15,000 lampposts can now be used to improve 4G Mobile network coverage.

A new study has used data collected by research group M-Lab to reveal that the United Kingdom delivers an average (mean) broadband download speed of just 16.51Mbps and ranks 31st fastest in the world versus 189 other countries. By comparison Singapore tops the chart with 55.13Mbps.

Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published their Q2 2017 (calendar) results and reported a total UK broadband customer base of 5,028,300 (up by +30,900 in Q2 vs +80,700 in Q1), although their £3bn Project Lightning network expansion is still rebooting itself after recent troubles.

The administrators for Lincolnshire-based fixed wireless broadband ISP AB Internet, which in late May 2017 shocked customers by announcing that the company had gone into administration and was looking to sell itself as a “going concern” (here), have revealed details of the ISP’s debt pile and sale.
