A partnership of five councils led by Liverpool City Council will today sign a new state aid supported £15.9m deal with BT to roll-out its “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to up to 98% of homes and businesses in the metropolitan county of Merseyside (North West England) by the end of July 2016.

The Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Environment, Richard Lochhead, has told Scotland’s Rural Affairs Committee that there is “now evidence of people leaving rural communities to live in urban areas” due to a lack of good broadband connectivity.

Broadband ISPs have only just got over the shock of Netflix’s introduction of a new Super HD (Super High Definition) video stream to their unlimited movie streaming service and now they’re being warned to expect an Ultra HDTV (UHDTV) 4K stream (3840 x 2160 pixels) in the not too distant future.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a direct mailing (post) advert for Sky (Sky Broadband) because it “misleadingly exaggerated” the effect of Virgin Media’s broadband Traffic Management Policy (TMP) and unfairly “denigrated” their brand.

JT Global (Jersey Telecom) has confirmed that it’s “well on track” to complete the roll-out of their new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network by the end of 2016 on Jersey (Channel Islands), which has already connected more than 5,000 premises.

The Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) has invited ISPs to two imminent industry day events in order to help them shape the final design of the Connection Vouchers scheme, which uses part of the £150m+ Urban Broadband Fund (“Super-Connected Cities“) to help businesses install a superfast broadband service.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has published its annual Measuring the Information Society (MIS) report (Q4 – 2012 data), which ranked the United Kingdom 8th overall for its access (e.g. broadband Internet), use and skills in Information and Communication Technology (up from 11th last year).

The North and North East Lincolnshire project to roll-out BT’s “high-speed fibre” (FTTC/P) based broadband network has received an additional boost of £1.2 million that should extend it to an extra 5,000 premises and a total coverage of 92% of local homes and businesses.

A new study conducted by budget ISP TalkTalk has claimed that over 500,000 homes in the United Kingdom are losing around 4Mbps of broadband download speed due to a bad in-home setup (e.g. poor wiring, not connecting via the Master Socket etc.). But never fear because they might just have a solution.

Customers of O2 UK have been told to wave “goodbye” to their free email / webmail service because the operator intends to close the accounts for “all mobile customers” on 1st November 2013. The service, which was once offered to all of their subscribers, is apparently no longer popular enough to be worth maintaining.

The government has announced an additional injection of £100 million to aid their Enterprise Zones, which were setup in 2011 to help predominantly disadvantaged urban areas and businesses to benefit from better transport networks, superfast broadband, various tax breaks and simplified planning rules.

AB Internet has told ISPreview.co.uk, as part of our exclusive interview, that the Valuation Office Agency’s review of how its business rates can be applied to fixed wireless networks could result in a “whole segment of society” being “digitally marooned“. The ISP also warned against an “all roads must lead to fibre” approach to broadband.

It’s been a long time coming but all six Berkshire unitary authorities (Councils) in south east England have today agreed to a new state aid supported £8 million deal with BT, which will roll-out a “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to cover “around” 91% of local premises by the end of September 2015.

In an effort to pull in more subscribers BT’s consumer division has today announced that its new BTSport TV service, which is usually offered for free alongside their various home broadband and phone packages, will become available to EVERYONE with Freeview, BT TV, Sky TV (Sky Broadband) or Virgin Media TV for several weeks this month.
