CityFibre Agrees to Sell UK Broadband ISP Lit Fibre to co-Founders

Network operator CityFibre, which earlier this year announced the acquisition of Lit Fibre’s full fibre network (here), has today resolved the problem of what to do with that provider’s customer base by agreeing to sell the retail ISP side of the business to the company’s co-founders, Tom Williams and Ben Bresler.

Essex UK Gang Jailed for £1m Theft of Openreach Broadband Cables

The Essex Police, which had been investigating thefts of copper broadband and phone cables from Openreach (BT) across several counties in England, have announced that a gang of four men have been jailed for a combined total of 14 years. The men were responsible for stealing almost £1m worth of the operator’s telecoms cables.

Scottish Government Launches New Digital Connectivity Website

The Scottish Government (SG) has launched a new Digital Connectivity website, which is now directly integrated into the main government website and appears to replace the old Digital Scotland (Superfast Scotland) site. The new site continues to cover the SG’s various broadband (e.g. R100), mobile, IoT and green data centre projects.

Wavenet Confirms UK Job Cuts Expected After Daisy Merger

Broadband, communications and managed service provider (MSP) Wavenet has indicated to ISPreview that they’re expecting to make some redundancies as part of their merger with Daisy Corporate Services (here), which aims to create the UK’s “largest independent IT managed service provider”. But the figure should be “substantially less” than 400.

nPerf Finds Top EU Countries Beat UK for Mobile Broadband Speeds

Internet benchmarking firm nPerf has today released the results of a new study into mobile broadband (3G, 4G and 5G) performance across several EU countries, which analysed 61,696 internet speed tests via their app (crowdsourced) to reveal that the average UK download is 80Mbps – this makes the country slower than Italy, Spain, Germany, Ireland, France and Portugal.

O2 UK Offers Pay As You Go Mobile Customers a Free DATA Boost

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has announced that, until 5th February 2025, both new and existing Pay As You Go (PAYG) mobile customers will get the chance to boost their data (mobile broadband) by up to three times the amount for no extra cost (e.g. those with a 10GB plan can boost it to 30GB – GigaBytes).

Brsk and YouFibre) will today post their latest Q3 2024 results, which among other things reveals that the annual build rate for their new 8Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) network has exceeded 1 million premises (total 1.82m, up 258k in quarter) and customer take-up hit 10.4% to total 190,000 (up 9% or 40k in quarter).

Enders Analysis Finds 20 Largest UK Altnet BT Rivals Lost £1.3bn in 2023

A new report from analyst firm Enders Analysis, which was today shared with ISPreview, has calculated that the 20 largest alternative UK broadband networks (i.e. BT / Openreach challengers) collectively suffered losses of around £1.304bn in 2023 (increased from £755m in 2022) – driven by high interest rates and rising build costs.
