The Chancellor of the UK government, Jeremy Hunt, has today given his 2023 Autumn Statement, which among other things has announced that the new “Full Expensing” policy will be made permanent. The change will help some full fibre broadband and mobile operators to bring down the cost of their network roll-outs. Planning tweaks are also coming.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) has today unveiled the list of winners from their annual 2023 INCA Awards event, which aims to recognise and celebrate the best alternative networks (altnets) and ISPs from across the UK. Suffice to say that it was a good night for Ogi, Freedom Fibre, Airband, CityFibre and others.

Mobile operator Vodafone is continuing to try and drum up support for their proposed merger with Three UK, which today sees them publishing new research that claims “expediting” the rollout of Standalone 5G (mobile broadband) could contribute an additional £7.4bn to the UK economy by 2030 compared to a slower deployment.

Network builder and UK broadband ISP Vorboss, which is investing £300m to build their 100Gbps full fibre network – dedicated to business – across central London (they’ve built over 500km of fibre since 2020), has launched a new product called ‘Retail Connect’ – offering speeds up to 10Gbps to the city’s “glass-front” retail outfits from just £150 a month.

Low-cost broadband provider Plusnet, which is part of the wider BT Group, has today revealed that they will shortly launch a new technical trial to test their planned deployment of the IPv6 internet addressing standard, which comes a over a decade after they first trialled the technology.

Mobile operator Sky Mobile has today announced that their 4G and 5G mobile services are being extended into many parts of the London Underground, which most likely reflects an expected extension of their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with O2 (VMO2).

The UK telecoms, internet and media regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new consultation on a proposed rule change that would see responsibility for day-to-day regulation of Premium Rate Services (PRS) being effectively transferred from the Phone-Paid Services Authority (PSA) to Ofcom.

Energy and telecoms provider Telecom Plus, which trades as UW (Utility Warehouse), has published their latest H1 FY24 results today and revealed that their broadband ISP has a total customer base of 363,595 (up by 22,203 in the year) and their mobile base hit 424,114 (up by 60,052). The operator also has a new CEO.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) appears to be conducting yet another trial of 2Gbps download speeds (we make this their 4th or 5th in so many years), but this time around they’ve managed to ramp the upload speed back up to 200Mbps. But so far as we can tell, this is currently only being tested on some of their latest XGS-PON lines.

Broadband ISP, phone and energy provider Shell Energy, which is in the process of being sold to the Octopus Energy Group (here), has today been fined £1.4m by Ofcom for “not properly prompting more than 70,000 phone and broadband customers” to review their contract or informing them of the best deals.

Business UK broadband ISP Commsworld has revealed that they’re due to complete a major £15 million network and IT upgrade of Renfrewshire Council’s Wide Area Network (WAN), which forms part of the Connectivity as a Service (CaaS) contract that was signed a few years ago to help modernise local public sector sites.

Customers who have accounts with both broadband ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 have, since 14th November, begun to receive emails that invite them to create a single online ID to access both accounts for the first time. The move comes a little over two years after the companies completed their merger deal.
