Top 50 UK Slowest Broadband Streets by Download Speed for 2012

A new study has used data from 2,261,336 internet speed tests to determine a list of the top 50 slowest streets for broadband ISP services, which saw Cromarty Road in Stamford (Lincolnshire) record the lowest score of just 0.132Mbps (Megabits per second). A list of the top 10 fastest streets has also been included.

Virgin Media UK Launch Broadband TV Anywhere Service At No Extra Cost

Cable operator Virgin Media has today announced the launch of its new Virgin TV Anywhere service, which allows the operators existing TV package subscribers to watch their favourite shows and channels from almost anywhere and at no extra cost; provided your fixed line or wifi can handle it (streaming over 3G is “not supported“).

Customers on Virgin Media’s UK cable broadband platform report that problems with high latency during peak times, which first struck the ISP last month when one of its public peering providers (Atrato) suddenly switched most of its traffic flow, appear to have returned.

ISP O2 UK Suffers Another Sharp Broadband Subscriber Decline to 579500

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (BE Broadband) has released its latest financial results to the end of September (Q3-2012), which revealed yet another fall in their fixed line broadband ISP subscriber base to 579,500 (down by -22,500 in the quarter). This is even worse than the -15,800 lost during Q2-2012.

Ofcom’s latest quarterly Telecoms Market Data Tables Q2 2012 report has revealed that the UK is now home to a total of 21.067 million fixed line home and small business broadband ISP connections (up from 20.91m in Q1-2012), which includes 601,000 superfast fibre optic based services (e.g. FTTC/P).

European ITRE Committee Wants 100Mbps Broadband for All by 2020

The European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) has supported calls for a “radical” boost to Europe’s Digital Agenda strategy, which could see “ultrafast” broadband ISP speeds of 100Mbps (Megabits per second) being made available to 100% of UK and EU households by 2020; with 50% able to get speeds of 1000Mbps (1Gbps).
