Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE (BT) has today become the latest network operator to switch-on a self-powered 4G and 5G (broadband) mobile site, which uses a mix of solar power and a wind turbine to help support its operation in a remote rural area of the Shropshire Hills (England). The deployment represents a trial, but more could follow.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has today announced the results of two recent 5G trials using a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmWave) radio spectrum, which managed to deliver home broadband (FWA) connectivity peak speeds of up to 4Gbps (dropping to 2.8Gbps in a more traditional mobile environment).

Ofcom has published the results from a new survey that is intended to help monitor how well the UK mobile market is functioning and whether it continues to deliver good outcomes. For example, the work reveals that unlimited data (broadband) tariffs accounted for 13% of mobile plans in 2023 (up from 5% in 2019), but plans with smaller allowances are now less common.

New subscribers can also get 6 months of free service.

Existing customers of UK mobile operator Vodafone, specifically those who take their Pay As You Go 1 plan, have been informed that the daily cost of the service will increase by 100% – from £1 to £2 – on 11th December 2024. The cost of data (broadband) usage per 50MB (charged after the first 250kb) is also rising from £1 to £2!

Eastbourne-based alternative network and UK ISP Lightning Fibre has announced that they’ve just connected their first customer in the seaside town of Worthing (West Sussex) to FTTP broadband. This is part of their recently agreed expansion (here) to harness CityFibre’s existing network across the Brighton & Hove and Worthing areas.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has revealed that they’re gearing up to be one of the first to deploy Nokia’s Altiplano Access Controller cloud (SDN) platform across their open access full fibre (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet network. This could boost automation, network visibility + control, and product flexibility for both ISPs and end-users.

Some customers of UK broadband ISP Zen Internet have complained about repeated service disconnections after their bundled FRITZ!box 7530 routers from AVM received a firmware update to the latest FRITZ!OS v8 software, which appears to have introduced an unexpected instability into the device.

The UK media and telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published a new letter that they recently sent to broadband and phone providers. The letter confirms their intention to decommission the old consumer ISP switching system (NoT+) on 24th October this week in favour of their new One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which is said to be “working well“.

Internet provider UltraNetworks has used vouchers from the Scottish Government to help it upgrade and deploy a new 5G Standalone (SA) based fixed wireless (FWA) network from Mormond Hill. The site will be able to serve homes and businesses in rural parts of North East Aberdeenshire (Scotland) with 1Gbps+ broadband speeds.

A new survey of 5,083 UK adult consumers, which was conducted by Which?, has claimed that the average broadband-only ISP customer could save £105 per year by switching to a new provider and those switching from BT, Sky Broadband or Virgin Media saved even more – up to £165 on average for a Virgin customer. It’s a similar story for mobile and TV users.

Eutelsat has confirmed that they’ve launched an additional 20 satellites, on the back of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, to join their global network of OneWeb broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which is a constellation that has been partly supported by the UK government. This is despite the network supposedly being completed last year.
