Alternative network ISP CommunityFibre (CF), which has deployed their 5Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to cover 1.35 million UK premises (mostly in Greater London), has reportedly “posted its maiden profit” after recording earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of £8m in 2024. Customers also grew to 336,000.

Alternative network provider Freedom Fibre (Lila Connect), which have so far grown their FTTP based gigabit broadband network to cover 315,000 premises (Nov 2024) across parts of Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Suffolk and Essex, has over the past week notified staff of more redundancies.

The shortlist for the fourth annual UK Fibre Awards event, which is due to take place next month (5th June 2025) at the London Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel, has recently been released. The event sees various broadband ISPs and full fibre network builders across several categories pick up awards for their achievements.

Liberty Global has confirmed that sibling nexfibre, which is working alongside UK ISP partner Virgin Media to deploy a new 10Gbps full fibre broadband (FTTP) network across over 5 million premises (c.2.2m have already been built), has scaled back its coverage target for 2025 to 2.5 million premises passed. At the same time, VMO2 “have paused our NetCo plans“.

Alternative network operator Netomnia (Brsk and ISP YouFibre), which has now expanded their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 2.4 million UK premises RFS (up from 2.2m end of Feb 2025) and connected 310,000 customers (up from 270k), has boosted their coverage target to 5 million premises and raised £160m in debt funding.

Customers of mobile network operator Three UK, which is in the process of merging with Vodafone, have this week been notified about the provider’s release of a refreshed Three App for Android (Google) and iOS (Apple) devices that began to become available on Monday (28th April 2025).

Business focused UK ISP, IT and Communications provider OneTek (One Tek Business Solutions), which typically provides leased lines, direct fibre connections, and point-to-point (P2P) antennas, has revealed that they intend to deploy a new full fibre network that will initially focus on providing B2B connectivity in the West Cheshire Business Estate area.

Mobile operator Vodafone has been awarded a second contract as part of its work with the Data Communications Company (DCC), which is working to upgrade existing Smart Meters in UK homes with Toshiba’s new 4G Communication Hub (details). But under the new deal they’ll also be providing some crucial fixed line data connectivity too.

The latest Q1 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have today been released, which saw their gigabit broadband network grow by 165,000 premises in the quarter to cover 18.4 million UK homes and related customers suffer a sharp fall to total 5,694,900 (down by -44k in Q1 vs +12k in Q4 2025) “due to heavy discounting in the market“. The operator’s outdoor 5G mobile cover also increased to 77%.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association, which represents alternative UK broadband operators, has today warned that they believe the “amendment proposed by Openreach” in the new Renters’ Rights Bill would be “ineffective” at solving the problem of how you get full fibre into large MDU buildings where deployment has been unreasonably refused or landlords cannot be contacted.

Fixed wireless and UK broadband provider Connexin, which is backed by PATRIZIA and is in the process of being acquired by CityFibre (here), has today signed a new agreement with Southend-on-Sea city council to install their Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) wireless network on existing infrastructure across the city. This will support smart water meters, without the need for new poles.

Network operator CityFibre, which recently appointed Censuswide to conduct a nationwide survey of UK farmers, has claimed that 8% of farms do not have any internet connectivity at all and yet almost two-thirds of farmers surveyed (60%) believe broadband is critical for day-to-day farming activities.

Telecoms giant BT has today signed a new “multi-million-pound” deal with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which will see EE provide 34,000 mobile connections to support workers and real-time reporting on issues from flooding to farming disease outbreaks across England, Scotland and Wales.

In a not unexpected development, network operator TfW Ffeibr (TFW Fibre), which is an arm’s-length initiative setup by Transport for Wales (TfW) – itself owned by the Welsh Government (WG), has applied for Code Powers from Ofcom in order to boost their plans for a full fibre broadband network that runs alongside local railways.

National network access provider Openreach (BT) has confirmed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers broadband speeds of up to 1800Mbps to UK homes via hundreds of ISPs, has now covered 18.3 million UK premises (Ready for Service). This is now growing at a rate of 1.1 million premises (RFS) per quarter.
