Ofcom have today published their latest quarterly (Q4 2024) study of UK consumer telecoms complaints, which shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) and TalkTalk for attracting the most complaints about broadband, while O2 took the most heat for Mobile and Virgin Media was put on the naughty step for Pay TV services.

Neos Networks, which operates one of the biggest 34,000km long business fibre networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 600+ Points of Presence (PoPs), has today released the results of new research that claims almost all of the market’s alternative networks (96%) are considering mergers, partnerships and acquisitions with other providers.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has confirmed that, as part of their ongoing UK programme to modernise and consolidate the number of offices they have – shrinking them from around 300 to just 30 locations, they’ve begun a consultation on the closure of their Londonderry office. The move, which could be implemented by the end of 2025, puts around 140 jobs at risk.

The UK Government today confirmed that Openreach (BT) have been formally awarded the £157 million state aid supported Project Gigabit broadband roll-out contract for Scotland (Call off 6). The deal will see the operator extending their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover an additional 65,000 of the hardest to reach rural premises.

Customers of banking and money management app Revolut, which last year launched a limited eSIM based mobile service for roaming travellers (here), has today revealed that they intend to go further by launching a full domestic mobile service for UK consumers with unlimited calls, texts, and data (mobile broadband) at home.

Over the past few days’, we’ve seen a succession of scaremongering newspaper articles, which appear to warn UK consumers that their wireless routers or broadband may “grind to a halt” during this week’s heatwave. The articles appear to have been triggered by some advice that Virgin Media issued, but the reality is that this week’s weather won’t cause any major broadband issues.

Network benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published the result of a new study that analyses the performance of Mobile Network Operators (MNOs like EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK) and then compares that with their many virtual operators (MVNOs like Sky Mobile, iD Mobile, Smarty etc.). Overall, the primary operators deliver faster data speeds than virtual providers.

Each provides a useful progress update on their efforts to deploy full fibre (FTTP) broadband across different parts of the UK.

New research from Broadband Genie has analysed 348,000 internet speed tests across 1,302 locations in order to identify the top slowest and fastest UK locations for broadband. The slowest location was found to be Lostwithiel in Cornwall (average downloads of 2Mbps and uploads of 1Mbps), while the fastest was South Hetton in County Durham (526Mbps down and 448Mbps up).

Network analyst firm Streetwave, which is using bin lorries to help map the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks across 113 UK councils, has revealed how much the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project has helped to improve mobile coverage across mid-Wales over the past 9 months – O2 saw the strongest improvement.

A new study from comparison site Go.Compare has claimed that broadband users who have a landline phone service included in their package could save as much as a combined £61.1m each month – across the UK – by switching to a non-landline deal (roughly £4.1 per month per user). But it’s not always quite so simple.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT today claims to have achieved the final step in their 5-year long “Better Workplace” transformation programme, which has involved modernising and consolidating the number of offices they have (going from around 300 and down to nearly 30 key locations), by opening a new office – the ‘Four New Bailey’ building – in Manchester.

Three Business, the business-to-business arm of mobile network operator Three UK, this morning claims to have launched the “UK’s first large-scale eSIM trial” for over 50,000 business, albeit initially only available to those in the Birmingham and Bristol areas. The trial will allow customers to test Three’s network before making the commitment to switch providers.

UK ISP BT has published their first biannual progress update for 2025 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,411 premises (up from 8,248 in Oct 2024), with 349 further builds in-progress (up from 215).

Online shopping giant Amazon last night succeeded in launching their first batch of 27 ultrafast broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for Project Kuiper. The platforms were put into space by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 551 rocket that unleashed some 2.7 million pounds (12 megaNewtons) of thrust.

Internet provider TalkTalk has today launched a free new tool called ‘Broadband Proactive Alerts‘, which is designed to notify customers about local network issues, “often before they even notice a problem“. But only some of the provider’s customers will be able to benefit from it.
