The Hampshire County Council (HCC) in England has concluded its state aid supported Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) and published a new report that summarises its “achievements and lessons learnt“. Overall, the project helped to extend superfast (30Mbps+) speeds from 80% in 2012 to 97.8% today, exceeding its 95% target.

A complaint by Vodafone has prompted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to investigate and ultimately ban a series of adverts for Virgin Media’s (VMO2) UK broadband ISP products after some of them “misleadingly” claimed to be offering the “fastest WiFi Guarantee of any major provider“.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has published a short progress update on their national plan and timeline for switching off the old 3G data (mobile broadband) network, which reveals some of the first UK locations that will be benefitting from the re-farming of related 3G spectrum for use by modern 5G services.

Infracapital-backed UK broadband ISP Fibrus, which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across Northern Ireland and North England, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve had to pull out of the state aid supported Project Gigabit contract for the North East of England. Ofcom has today published their latest biannual UK consumer affordability report, which reveals that the take-up of cheaper social broadband ISP and mobile tariffs for those on state benefits has increased to 380,000 households (up from 220,000 six months ago). But that still represents just 8.3% of households on Universal Credit (4.6 million).

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published the outcome of their review into whether mid-contract price hikes that are linked to inflation give mobile and broadband ISP customers enough certainty and clarity about what they can expect to pay. Suffice to say, they’re effectively banning the practice.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’ve made big progress toward their goal of helping 4 million UK people and businesses, usually reflecting those who are “experiencing digital exclusion“, cross the digital divide by 2025. As a result, they’ve so far donated connectivity to 2 million people, usually via free mobile data (broadband) and calling SIMs.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today unveiled its usual round of annual price increases across their wholesale broadband and Ethernet products for UK ISPs, which touches on everything from full fibre (FTTP) lines to FTTC (VDSL2 / SOGEA), Cablelinks, ISDN and Ethernet Access Direct (EAD), among other products.

UK ISP TalkTalk has published their annual accounts to 28th Feb 2023 and revealed that their broadband base fell to 3.94 million (down from 3.98m in 2022), while the provider’s bosses also reportedly warned that there is “material uncertainty” ahead of an expect debt refinancing that “may cast significant doubt” over its future.

Ofcom has today proposed to update their resilience guidance to provide greater clarity on how UK broadband ISPs, mobile operators and other digital network companies can “reduce the risk of network outages“. Separately, they’re also seeking feedback on the issue of inadequate power backup at mobile network sites.
