UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today announced that they’ve reduced the monthly price of their “Essential Broadband” plan from £15 to £12.50, which offers speeds of just 15Mbps (2Mbps upload), unlimited data usage and a 30-day rolling contract to those receiving Universal Credit. But they’ve also added a new 50Mbps option.

London focused UK ISP CommunityFibre, which has so far covered 675,000 premises in the city and South East with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, has this afternoon announced that they’ve signed a new finance facility of £985m that will enable the company to execute the next phase of their rollout.

The latest biannual data from Point Topic has revealed how the top and bottom ten UK local authorities have changed, at least with respect to their coverage of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks. As before, Hull remains at the top of the table (99.3%), but the Isles of Scilly (1.5%) are now at the bottom.

Network builder Freedom Fibre, which is supported by broadband ISP TalkTalk, has announced their first build in Wales with the £14m rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to the city of Wrexham. Previously, the provider had tended to only focus on semi-rural parts of North England.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) team has informed ISPs of several forthcoming changes to their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which helps those in rural areas to get a gigabit-capable internet connection installed. The big news is that the maximum voucher values are to be increased.

London-based Axione UK, a subsidiary of French provider Axione that is investing £300m to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to 4 million UK premises, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that their initial build is “on track” to cover 30,000 premises by the end of March 2023.

Network operator Upp has announced that they’ve chosen Finnish telecoms firm Nokia to be the delivery partner for a huge chunk (c. 400,000 premises) of their project, which is working to rollout a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband ISP network across the East of England.

Alternative network builder Netomnia – supported by broadband ISP YouFibre – has today announced that their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network has now covered a total of 265,000 premises (up from 210k in August) and become the “first alt-net with presence in all four countries in the United Kingdom.”

Ofcom’s autumn 2022 report into fixed broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 37% of the UK, while 20.2 million homes (68%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network and 48-64% of premises can now get outdoor 5G coverage by at least one operator.
