Budget home broadband ISP TalkTalk appears to be getting closer to launching their own take on a Digital Voice (VoIP) product to replace analogue phone services, which will come alongside a number of connectivity options. One of those will also include the introduction of a new ‘Wi-Fi Hub 2‘ router.

The Collective Action on Land Lines (CALL) has announced that the Court of Appeal (CoA) have dismissed BT’s appeal against an earlier ruling by the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT), which last year rejected the ISP’s attempt to stop a £600m class action claim related to the alleged overcharging of 2.3 million landline-only phone customers.

Ofcom has today posted some additional analysis on the impact of their End-of-Contract Notifications (ECN) system, which reveals that customer re-contracting on major broadband ISPs has increased as a result of its introduction – varying from a rise of 13% on Plusnet to just 3% on TalkTalk.

Customers of Plusnet’s business broadband packages have recently begun to notice that the ISP has not been delivering on their pledge of offering “dedicated 24/7 UK based customer support“, with some users complaining that their phone lines close down after 8pm – the same time as the weekday cut-off for residential support.

A new UK ISP called Brillband has today soft-launched itself by proclaiming to be the “world’s first … app-based broadband provider,” which is said to have the “potential to completely change the way broadband is delivered” and is being backed by an initial investment of £660,000 from VC firm Fuel Ventures.

Fixed wireless UK ISP Stix Internet has announced that the first rural homes and businesses have just gone live on their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network near to Huddersfield in West Yorkshire (England), which is being supplied to consumers via their Northern Fibre sub-brand.

SpaceX has begun sending out new emails to customers on their Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband ISP satellites, which announces the availability of their new ‘Portability‘ add-on (i.e. the ability to move the system to a different location and still receive service). But it’s NOT free.

Exeter-based network builder FullFibre Limited has today announced that their UK rollout of a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network has been expanded to a fourth region, which will see them spreading across the North Midlands and Yorkshire – starting with 22 new locations.

The inaugural UK Fibre Awards event has recently announced its first shortlist of potential winners for 2022, which lists various broadband ISPs and network builders across ten categories (e.g. Best Rural Fibre Provider, Best Urban Fibre Provider etc.). Some providers, such as Giganet, managed to be shortlisted across multiple categories.

Last month we revealed that UK broadband ISP Zen Internet had put their headline grabbing “Lifetime Price Guarantee” pledge (i.e. no price rises for as long as a contracted customer stays with them) under review for new customer contracts (here). As expected, Zen has now confirmed that new customers will no longer be able to benefit.

A new survey of 2,019 UK residents with broadband connections, which was conducted by National Broadband, has claimed that almost two thirds (63%) of broadband users in the UK do not know they are entitled to demand access to download speeds of 10Mbps+ (Universal Service Obligation). But this conclusion might not be correct.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has responded to a BT complaint by banning a UK website and TV advert for Virgin Media’s Gig1 Fibre broadband package, which saw the operator promote itself as the “UK’s fastest major broadband provider“, after they failed to include sufficient information to verify their comparisons.
