Broadband ISP Trooli, which aims to reach 1 million premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network by the end of 2024 (mostly across Kent, East Sussex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Suffolk), appears to have recently added a number of new locations to the “coming soon” section of their rollout plan.

Support agents working for mobile operator EE (BT) have denied claims by some UK customers (here and here), and online news reports (here, here and here), that their mobile broadband (4G and 5G) network is intentionally blocking Apple’s iCloud linked ‘Private Relay‘ feature (such a block may clash with Net Neutrality rules).

Mobile operator Vodafone UK reports that the introduction of their new SMS Firewall, which began at the start of September 2021 and works to both identify and block fraudulent text messages, resulted in the daily average volume of scam texts falling by an impressive 76% in December 2021 compared to May. In short, less SPAM for Christmas.

Openreach (BT) has released the Tranche 7 batch of 98 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” network (FTTP and G.fast at 300Mbps+).

Security firm SentinelLabs has revealed a serious new vulnerability in KCodes NetUSB kernel module, which could enable hackers to remotely hijack various routers. Sadly, the flaw appears to affect millions of end user broadband and WiFi routers from major brands (e.g. NETGEAR, Edimax, D-Link, Tenda, TP-Link and Western Digital).

The latest State of Rural Services report, which is being published today by Rural England CIC, has warned that many people in the country’s small towns and villages still face being “digitally excluded and locked out of key services” due to an “underinvestment in rural connectivity” (e.g. broadband and mobile infrastructure) and skills.

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is the virtual operator sibling of Vodafone UK, has unsurprisingly followed their parent’s lead by confirming that free EU roaming will come to an end on their network from April 2022 (a little later than the end of January 2022 date set for their parent).

CityFibre has today confirmed that they’re investing £5 million to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to reach “thousands of premises” in the Cambridgeshire (England) town of March, which is currently home to over 22,000 people.

Broadband ISP BorderLink, which currently covers rural areas across Northumberland, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders with their wireless network, has today secured a huge investment of £164m to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises across the North of England and Borders areas.

Rural broadband builder Broadway Partners (aka – UK ISP Broadway Broadband) has secured another contract in Powys (Wales), worth £450,000, to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to serve premises in the communities of Aberedw and Glascwm (this follows Dwyriw and Manafon).

Customers of O2 and Virgin Mobile (VMO2) may be pleased to learn that the mobile operator has just said they “will not be reintroducing roaming fees in Europe.” The move is likely to afford them a distinct competitive advantage for travellers over rivals at EE (BT), Three UK and Vodafone, where inclusive EU roaming is due to end (example).

Some homes in the remote rural hamlet of Cartel Fell, which sits in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria (England), have been left without access to a working fixed line broadband ISP or phone service for six long weeks. The problems began after Openreach’s local telecoms infrastructure was significantly damaged by Storm Arwen.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has just taken the wraps off yet another update to the still fairly young 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) wireless networking standard which, for marketing purposes, is simply to be called ‘Wi-Fi 6 Release 2‘ and brings with it a couple of key improvements – mostly focused upon boosting upload speeds and power management.
