Broadband ISP TalkTalk has taken a closer look at the internet traffic from over 1 million of their customers on Christmas Day and managed to identify the top five video gaming console gifts. The data reveals that Nintendo’s Switch console was by far the most popular gaming gift for 2021, with 22,995 new devices being connected on the big day.

KCOM, which recently extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 premises across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England (here), have published their annual accounts and revealed that their total broadband customer base has grown to 139,700 (most are now on fibre, having migrated from copper).

Mobile operators Vodafone and EE (BT) have moved to mildly delay the planned reintroduction of EU roaming charges, which will eventually see most customers being charged £2 per day to use their UK allowances (calls, texts and data / mobile broadband) across related countries. Previously, you could do this at no extra cost.

ISP Lothian Broadband, which last year proposed to extend their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 50,000 premises across rural parts of East and Mid Lothian, has secured a major funding boost of £20m from the Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) and their rollout target has been raised to 70,000 premises.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media UK, including those on Virgin Mobile, are starting to receive a new notification that informs them of a forthcoming price hike to their fixed line broadband, phone, TV and or mobile services, which for example will see the average price of their cable services increase by £4.70 from March 2022.

Broadband and phone services have been disrupted for a second time in the Witchford area of Cambridgeshire (England) after thieves caused “significant damage” by cutting through one of Openreach’s secure boxes. But it’s unclear what, if anything, was actually stolen as a result of this attack.

Alternative network ISP Truespeed, which until now has been fuelled by £75m from Aviva Investors to help build their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Somerset (England), has today kicked off 2022 by securing another £100m from the same investor to help accelerate their expansion plans.

Last August we reported that a subsidiary of French provider Axione, Axione Fibre (Axione UK), planned to build a new gigabit speed open-access wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network for ISPs to harness in the UK (here), which was backed by £300m (equity) of initial funding. We now know the first piece of their rollout plan.

Ofcom has published some of the first responses from UK broadband ISPs and internet content providers to their new review of Net Neutrality rules, which were designed to ensure no serious blocking or slowing of access to legal websites or other online services by ISPs and mobile operators. Suffice to say, vested interests split the pack.

The latest independent biannual summary of UK broadband coverage for H2 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 30.23% of premises (up from 24.33% in H1 2021), while 65.27% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 41.72%) and 67.63% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 66.9%).

The UK Government has published the 2022 New Year Honours List, which sees the former Executive Chairman of BT Group, Jan du Plessis, scooping a knighthood for “services to Telecommunications and Business.” Sadly, there were no other honours for members of the wider broadband ISP and UK telecoms community.

The Welsh Government’s £10m Local Broadband Fund has allocated £900,000 from its budget to help build a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to serve 13 “hard to reach properties” in Powys as part of its Phase Two deployment, with incidental benefits provided to an additional 139 properties across the county.

Today we’re taking our annual look back at how the United Kingdom’s position, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband and mobile broadband (4G, 5G) speeds, has changed since 2020. In short, the UK jumped from 42nd to 26th for mobile, while we fell slightly from 47th to 48th for fixed lines.
