Ofcom’s latest Summer 2021 report into UK broadband and mobile coverage has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage is now at 24% (up from 21% in Jan 2021) and 11.6 million homes (40%) are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 37%). Meanwhile, 4G mobile coverage remains stable and there’s still no data on 5G.

The UK Government has announced that their project to create a National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which reflects a digital map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (fibre optic broadband, power etc.), is entering the “Build Phase” and could help to cut some of the £2.4bn (per year) cost of accidental utility damage.

Consumer site Expert Reviews has posted the winners of their annual ‘Mobile Network Awards’ event, which surveyed their readers in an effort to identify the best UK Mobile Network Operators across a range of different categories. But in the end, Sky Mobile (Sky Broadband) ended up winning every single category, with giffgaff and Tesco Mobile being runners-up in different areas.

Openreach (BT) has today named a further 17 new “rural” towns and villages across Northern Ireland that, over the next 18 months, will benefit from a local investment of £130m (up from the prior commitment of £100m) to help expand the reach of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

UK ISP Yayzi Broadband, which has already launched a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service in Blackpool (Lancashire) by harnessing ITS Technology‘s network, has now joined CityFibre’s rival full fibre build in order to expand their local coverage, as well as being able to launch in the nearby town of Preston.

The boss of German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom (DT), Tim Hoettges, has renewed long-running speculation over their reported desire to gobble the BT Group by hinting that “something is going to happen” with their 12% stake within the next 12 months, before adding that they would do a “good deal” for the UK broadband firm.

OneWeb, which is part owned by the UK Government, has confirmed that their global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based broadband satellites is now compatible with the Kymeta u8 flat panel user terminal. A test in France was also able to achieve download speeds of over 200Mbps and uploads of 40Mbps “over repeated testing.”

Fixed wireless UK ISP 6G Internet (IX Wireless) has announced that their 100Mbps capable “Air Fibre” broadband network is now rolling out, via new telegraph poles, across the Lancashire town of Burnley and its surrounding areas. The first services are expected to go live for local customers within the “coming months“.

The national telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today started a review of their existing Net Neutrality rules, which were designed to ensure no serious blocking or slowing of access to legal websites or internet services by broadband ISPs and mobile operators. But such protections may soon change.

CityFibre UK has today started the rollout of their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the South East England based cathedral city of Chichester. At the same time, Kent-based ISP Vfast (Orbital Net) has announced that they will also be providing services via CF’s network in Medway.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today switched-on their DOCSIS 3.1 network for a further 1.7 million UK premises, which means that a total of 10 million premises can now access speeds of 1130Mbps down and 52Mbps up. The latest areas include Blackpool, Cambridge, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, Swindon and more.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced the launch of a new “Connect the Unconnected” offer, which will make it possible for UK ISPs to waive “superfast broadband connection fees” for any customers who receive ‘Universal Credit’ with no other earnings, and who aren’t currently connected to its network.

Broadband ISP Trooli, which is building a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South and South East England, has signed one of the first long-term Joint User Pole (JUP) agreements with UK Power Networks. The move will enable them to run their fibre optic cables across certain low voltage electricity poles.
