Business ISP M247 (Metronet UK and Venus Business Communications), which offers a range of fibre optic and wireless broadband based connectivity solutions, has almost doubled its existing headquarters footprint to nearly 12,000sq ft at the Manchester Science Partnerships’ Turing House building.

A new independent model has estimated that the coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom has grown to 95.8% at the end of 2018 (up from 95.3% in H1 2018), while “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks now reach 5.47% of premises (up from 3.82% in H1).

Consumer UK ISP BT has begun to trial a new way of checking customer broadband speeds, which sounds like it will require special code (firmware) to be added on to the end-users router (Smart Hub etc.) in order to test and monitor their line. This could help them to comply with Ofcom’s forthcoming changes.

Back in 2017 the Conservative UK government committed £150m to “help provide ultra-fast broadband” (100Mbps+) across Northern Ireland, which formed part of a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to secure the support of their MPs. But the plan now focuses upon 30Mbps+ speeds and is stuck in limbo.

The Greater London Authority’s Strategic Investment Pot has awarded £800,000 to the Borough of Havering, which will be used to deploy a new ultrafast fibre optic network into the Rainham area. This could be used for improving connectivity to both public sector sites and businesses.

The Fastershire scheme in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire (England) has confirmed that they’ve sent Gigaclear’s revised Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband roll-out plan back to the drawing board. The move follows last year’s news (here), which revealed that the UK ISP’s contract had suffered “unexpected delays.”

Network builder Nextgenaccess, which recently secured £22m from the UK National Digital Infrastructure Fund (NDIF) to help spread its 10Gbps fibre optic broadband to businesses in South Wales and South West England (here), has appointed the former CEO of ISP Gamma (Bob Falconer) to be its new Non-Executive Director.

Real estate company Strutt & Parker has suggested that UK farmers, many of which aren’t exactly swimming in lots of spare cash, should consider investing to build their own “private” broadband networks instead of waiting for whatever the Government’s 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) will deliver.

A new survey of 92 businesses in the UK county of Somerset, which was conducted by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce (SCC), has revealed that local firms are more concerned about issues around education and skills (56%) and digital infrastructure (52%) than the imminent arrival of Brexit (42%).

A new online survey of 1,380 ISPreview.co.uk readers, which was conducted between 16th November 2018 and 2nd January 2019, has found that the top reasons why most UK respondents switched broadband ISP in 2018 were to save money (29.9%) or get access to faster speeds (25.4%), while 18.3% simply sought better quality.

A number of broadband ISPs including TalkTalk, Hyperoptic, Cityfibre and Gigaclear, as well as the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), have written to the UK Government and Ofcom in the hope of encouraging tougher measures to prevent Openreach (BT) from hampering “full fibre” (FTTP) competition.
