14th Oct 2024 (10 Comments)

Some 10,000 premises in Nottinghamshire (England) have suffered a disruption to their broadband and phone services after Openreach’s (BT) network was “maliciously damaged” by criminals. The details are currently unclear, although the fact that the operator has to replace around 700 metres of cable suggests copper theft may be the cause.

The CEO of alternative broadband operator MS3, Guy Miller, has confirmed to Richard Tang (CEO of ISP Zen Internet), in a new interview, that they’ve just begun a trial with KCOM in Hull that will allow them to deploy their full fibre (FTTP) lines by harnessing some of the incumbent’s existing poles and ducts – potentially reducing community complaints.

Debt-troubled broadband ISP TalkTalk, which was recently saved from the immediate risk of a default by a refinancing package worth roughly £400m (here and here), may now find it even harder to find a buyer after their auditor of 22 years – Deloitte – resigned and was replaced by RSM.

The UK Government (DSIT) has published an evaluation report into the c.£6.2 million “Fibre in Water” trial (Project TAWCO), which tested the deployment of fibre optic (FTTP) cables through a live water mains (used for drinking water) but, as we previously reported (here), ended up being stalled due to several issues.

Network operator CityFibre has given ISPreview an update on the effort to upgrade their GPON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network for ISPs to XGS-PON, which can handle broadband speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second). However, not much progress seems to have been made since the end of 2023, but it is still moving forward.

12th Oct 2024 (13 Comments)

A small but growing number of O2 UK’s (Virgin Media) mobile customers have reported that the operator has assigned an Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) address to their connections, although in most cases the IP address itself is not fully functional (certainly doesn’t work on data / mobile broadband connections).

Openreach (BT) has released the next batch of 79 exchanges (Tranche 18) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre lines and will thus stop selling copper based analogue phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

11th Oct 2024 (9 Comments)

A rather basic new study, which was conducted by tech refurbishment firm Back Market, has analysed the number of nuisance call reports coming from 752 area codes across the UK – as reported on who-called.co.uk – to see which ones receive the highest percentage of reports nationally. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its size, London was found to be the area most exploited by cold callers.
