A new RootMetrics study finds that mobile operator EE has beaten Vodafone, O2 and Three UK to be crowned the fastest and most reliable Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) provider for the cities of Birmingham, Coventry and Leicester in England during the first half of 2014.

Mobile operator EE has announced that their “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network will soon be expanded to cover 2,588 villages and small towns with populations under 10,000. At the same time the operator also plans to extend the footprint of its “double speed” (150Mbps) network to 40 towns and cities by the end of 2014 and there’s more..

The latest Q1-2013 (calendar) financial results for Vodafone UK have revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base appears to have stabilised at 59,000 customers (unchanged from the end of 2013), which follows last year’s Q2-2013 fall from 85,000.

The outspoken boss of business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has predicted that the latest generation of fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband connectivity will steadily remove the need for consumer to be forced into paying for a copper-line Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) on top of their Internet connectivity, but for BT it’s still too much of a “cashcow” to ignore.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced the next batch of locations for their national roll-out of “ultrafast” 4G based Mobile Broadband connectivity, which is now live in 233 large towns and cities across the United Kingdom (we predict they’re currently able to reach around 40% of the UK).

Telecoms provider O2 UK has today moved one step closer to becoming fully Public Services Network (PSN) compliant after it become “the first mobile operator” in the United Kingdom to achieve CAS(T) certification (a test of network security) for its mobile voice and data services.

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has today released its latest results for Q1-2014 (calendar), which saw them add +10k new broadband customers in the quarter to total 4,196,000 (better than the +5k in Q4-2013). But of most interest are their plans for ultrafast FTTP broadband and a converged fixed-mobile offer using 4G spectrum and femtocells.

The standard for the next generation of 5G mobile communications technology is still being debated, yet that hasn’t stopped telecoms giant Ericsson from teaming up with Japanese mobile firm NTT DOCOMO to test its own 10Gbps+ (Gigabits per second) capable solution in Yokosuka; albeit using the 15GHz radio frequency band.

Eurotunnel has today confirmed that Le Shuttle and High Speed Train commuters travelling along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route, which links the UK to France, can now access 2G and 3G based mobile phone and mobile broadband connectivity via EE and Vodafone (O2 will soon follow) thanks to a new fibre optic based GSP-P retransmission system. 4G is coming soon.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that customers of their Red 4G plans (including business travellers) will now also be able to make use of “ultrafast” Mobile Broadband connectivity when roaming across Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

The communications regulator has today set out its approach and priorities (e.g. future 5G mobile broadband) for managing and sharing (e.g. white space technology) the country’s radio spectrum up to the year 2025. As part of this, Ofcom has also published an Interactive Spectrum Map to show how different frequencies are used in the United Kingdom.

Mobile operator and ISP EE UK has recorded one of its best quarters of fixed line broadband subscriber growth after it added more than +19,000 customers in Q1-2014 to total 745,000 (up from +12k in Q4-2013). Meanwhile their 4G mobile customer base grew from 1,996,000 in Q4-2013 to reach 2.9m now (+889k in the quarter).

EE (4GEE) has announced that its “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband (4GEE) network has now arrived in a total of 200 cities and towns (12 new additions went live this week), which means that their related network coverage (population) of the United Kingdom has expanded to 72%.

Mobile operator O2 (O24G) has announced that their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network can now cover 41% of the United Kingdom’s outdoor population (around 33% for indoor users) in 191 Towns and Cities, which apparently equates to about 20 million people.

Mobile operator Lycamobile, which uses O2’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform, has launched a new 4G based top-up (UK Plan 12) that claims to offer 500 UK minutes with “unlimited” texts and data for just £12. Sounds good, until your connection gets throttled back to almost dialup speeds.
