The communications regulator has today proposed to boost the maximum permissible “base station transmit power” in the 1800MHz radio spectrum band for 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE / WiMAX) based Mobile Broadband and voice services by +3dB, which could improve coverage and capacity.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has announced that its 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network, which currently reaches more than 70% of the UK population, is now available from another 12 towns. Coverage has also been improved on “key routes” between Edinburgh – Glasgow and Cardiff – Swansea.

BT has today signed a multi-year agreement that will allow them to build a new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform and services using EE’s 2G, 3G and 4G based network in the United Kingdom, which also means they’ll be “carefully” parting ways with their existing MVNO partner Vodafone UK.

Mobile operator Three UK has, much as we predicted last month (here), today dropped unlimited Mobile Broadband Tethering support from its “all-you-can-eat” data based tariffs and replaced it with a 2GB (GigaByte) usage cap. On the upside.. calls to 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers are now free from mobiles too.

Mobile operator EE has announced that their customers in the United Kingdom will now also be able to benefit from “superfast” 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband connectivity when roaming around France and Spain, which will be offered at no extra cost over their existing charges. More countries to follow.

RootMetrics has today published their H2 2013 Rootscore Report, which uses data collected from 840,000 network and speed tests conducted across the United Kingdom to reveal which mobile operator is best for Internet access, calls and texting. Suffice to say that EE topped the table in all respects, while Vodafone was almost always at the bottom.

BT’s up to 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology now comes in a new flavour – GEA-FTTC Street Access. The service appears to be targeted at mobile operators that want to improve local wifi and 4G coverage by utilising council street furniture (e.g. payphones) but can’t get or don’t need a full fibre optic line for the capacity.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has picked Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) instead of existing partner Huawei to help them roll-out their “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network to “the next 25% of the UK population in rural areas and small towns.”

Mobile operator Three UK looks set to disappoint new customers when it drops unlimited Mobile Broadband tethering support from related mobile tariffs (e.g. The One Plan) in March 2014, which will instead be replaced by a 2GB usage cap.

Telecoms operator EE has released its latest Q4-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base added +12k new customers in the quarter to total 726,000 (up from +10k added in Q3), while their 4G based Mobile Broadband users went from 1.2m in Q3 to 1.996m now.

The communications regulator has assessed the impact for both licensed and licence-exempt uses of the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands and found that the risk of interference with other services, such as WiFi (adjacent 2.4GHz band), did exist but wasn’t big enough to be worth worrying about.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has extended the reach of its “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network to 14 more towns (total 174 towns and cities) and 18 of the UK’s largest airports, which means their service now covers 70% of the population. Commuters on key rail and road routes will also benefit.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today claimed that its new “ultrafast” (ugh the terminology..) 4G based Mobile Broadband network has managed to attract 500,000 customers within the first six months of going live and their network coverage is now reaching 36% of the United Kingdom (population).

A new survey conducted by Anglian Farmers, which is the largest agricultural purchasing group in the UK with a buying power in excess of £250m, claims to demonstrate the need for better rural mobile network coverage. Sadly it also comes up a bit short on both detail and comparisons.

It’s already possible to make 2G based voice calls on-board flights (note: not all allow it though) and Ofcom has now launched a new consultation that aims to extend this by enabling the use of 3G (UMTS at 2100MHz) and 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based Smartphones and related devices on a licence-exempt basis while flying.
