UK Post Office Confirms Launch of New Mobile Network

In an unsurprising move the Post Office has confirmed that their existing fixed line broadband and phone services, which are now predominantly supplied by TalkTalk’s platform after last year’s traumatic move away from BT (here), will soon be complement by a mobile product thanks to their new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deal with EE.

Manx Telecom Deploy 4G LTE Mobile Broadband Across the Isle of Man

Some years have passed since Manx Telecom‘s first trial of 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband technology on the Isle of Man (British Crown Dependency) in 2011 (here) and now they’re planning to make the “superfast” service available to 95% of the Islands population at “no extra cost” (so long as you already have a 4G ready handset).

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they “don’t expect” to be making their new 300Mbps 4G (LTE-Advanced) based Mobile Broadband service commercially available in 2014 as originally planned, although a good amount of central London will be covered as part of the on-going trials and download speeds of “well over” 100Mbps are being recorded.

Akamai Q1-2014 Report Shows Average UK Internet Speeds Reach 9.9Mbps

Akamai, a content delivery network, has today published its latest State of the Internet report for Q1 2014 and revealed that average global broadband download speeds have increased by just 1.8% over the last quarter to 3.9Mbps (Megabits). Meanwhile the UK saw its performance rise by 5.5% to top 9.9Mbps, making us the 15th fastest country (down from 13th in Q4-2013), but most still aren’t ready for 4K video streams.

EE Bring 4G Mobile Broadband to 73% of UK – 229 Large Towns and Cities

EE has deployed their “superfast” 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network to another 14 large towns (total of 229 large towns / cities and more than 2,500 villages / small towns), which raises their overall network coverage to 73% of the United Kingdom (population). But they’ll need to go a lot faster to hit the 98% target.

The Cloud (BSkyB) has today added to their 1,000+ WiFi hotspots in Wales by signing two new partners (the Aneurin Bevan and Cwm Taf health boards) from the healthcare industry, which means that their free wireless Internet connectivity is now being deployed to a total of 18 Welsh healthcare locations.

Sony – UK Needs Better Broadband to Boost UK Music Streaming

Sony’s Director of Digital Sales for Sweden, Jacob Herbst, has said that he expects Internet streaming services (e.g. Spotify, Deezer etc.) to take off in the United Kingdom once broadband infrastructure improves. Funny.. we thought it had already taken off and for a moment needed to check that we weren’t still stuck in 2010 or earlier.

The Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has confirmed that they’re discussing a proposal with Mobile Network Operators (e.g. Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2) to boost mobile broadband (3G, 4G) and general mobile service reception by encouraging greater sharing of masts and a national roaming policy.

EE to Conduct LIVE UK Trials of Voice Calls over WiFi and 4G Mobile

Mobile operator EE has announced, as part of their 2014 investment of £275m to improve phone calls, that it will soon conduct one of the United Kingdom’s first trials of Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE / 4G) tech using the 800MHz band (this will also benefit rural areas) and a similar trial using WiFi (native SMS/TXT services will also available through WiFi).

The communications regulator has given preliminary approval to a proposal by the sibling of Hong Kong telecoms giant PCCW (HKT) and parent to London-based wireless ISP Relish, UK Broadband Limited, which is seeking an indefinite extension to its existing licence for radio spectrum within the 3.4GHz band.

Telecoms giant Ericsson has today published its annual Mobility Report, which reveals that Internet video services will grow to account for more than 50% of mobile data traffic in 2019 (up from around 40% today) and 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage in Europe will reach 80% (currently 25%) by the same year. But 4G uptake could struggle.

RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Survey – Public WiFi Hurt by Security Fears and Fiddly Signup Forms

A new survey of 827 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 63.3% of respondents would rather use Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) than a public WiFi hotspot (26.1%) to go online when out and about, while 10.5% said they don’t use either. Apparently the key reasons for this are due to fears over weak wifi security and the fiddly sign-up forms.
