Mobile network operator O2 UK has joined EE by becoming the second provider to introduce a new range of dedicated 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband packages, which are designed for use with Tablets, Laptops or special USB Dongles (Modems). But don’t expect a big data allowance.

Global telecoms giant Ericsson has published its latest Mobility Report (Q3-2013) and revealed that the world is currently home to 2 billion Mobile Broadband subscribers (total mobile subscriptions of around 6.6bn) and that this will reach 8bn by 2019 (9.3bn total mobile subs) when 2.6bn will also be on 4G LTE services.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has today launched their special 4G (LTE) based fixed wireless home broadband service, which focuses on rural areas and will cost up to around £25 per month for a data allowance of 25GB (though smaller packages start at £7.50). The first to benefit will be residents in remote parts of Cumbria (England).

Cable operator Virgin Media Business confirms that it has completed the build of their new “super-fast” public wifi wireless Internet hotspot service in the centre of Birmingham, which covers around 2.5 square miles of the city and offers “no usage limits“.

EE (4GEE) has confirmed that its first trial of ultrafast 300Mbps (Megabits per second) capable 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband speeds should get underway in East London (Tech City) today, although the full commercial roll-out isn’t due to begin until summer 2014; once more end-user hardware is available to support it.

The final RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband speeds in London, which conducted more than 86,000 tests across the city, has confirmed that EE remain the fastest operator for mobile Internet performance thanks to their comparatively advanced 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) network. By contrast O2, Three UK and Vodafone were well off the pace.

Telecoms analyst firm Analysys Mason has warned that operators like EE, which will soon launch a new Home Fixed Wireless service using its 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) Mobile Broadband technology to help connect isolated rural areas in the United Kingdom, will face a number of challenges not least with the high cost of mobile data.

Mobile operator and ISP EE (Orange UK and T-Mobile) has published its latest Q3-2013 financial results and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base has continued its slow but steady growth to total 714,000 users (up +10,000 during Q3, the same level as Q2). Meanwhile 4G mobile customers have jumped from 687,000 in Q2 to 1.18 million now.
