The boss of UK business ISP Fluidata, Piers Daniell, has said that he is “somewhat underwhelmed” by the lower than hoped for Mobile Broadband speeds of EE’s new 4G (LTE) service and expressed similar disappointment about its low and “misjudged” usage allowances.

The results from 749 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest reader poll found that just 15.3% would currently be willing to pay extra for a faster 4G based Mobile Broadband service, while the rest either said “no” (48%) or were simply undecided (36.5%). Mobile operator EE will launch the first national UK 4G service before the end of this month.

The UK’s primary Mobile Broadband operators have today setup a new company called Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (formerly MitCo), which will work to ensure that 900,000 UK homes don’t lose Freeview Digital TV (DTV) services when the new 4G (LTE) products, via the 800MHz band, arrive next year.

The UK government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has announced a new £35 million partnership between mobile phone operators, telecoms equipment makers and the University of Surrey that aims to develop the 5th Generation (5G) of Mobile Broadband technologies.

The country’s mobile phone operators have finally agreed to put aside their differences after Ofcom moved its timetable for the auction of superfast 4G (LTE) compatible mobile broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz) forward by roughly 6 months, which weakened EE’s perceived early-launch advantage. Mobile operators O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone have been given the green light to merge their UK based 2G, 3G and future 4G (LTE) platforms through a new network sharing agreement that will also lay the foundations for 98% population coverage by the end of 2015 (two years ahead of Ofcom’s 2017 deadline).

The government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, will this week make a final play to prevent legal wrangling between the country’s big mobile operators from delaying Ofcom’s auction of superfast 4G compatible mobile broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz). The offer of an earlier spectrum release could be on the cards.

Cable operator Virgin Media Business claims to have “successfully trialled … LTE-ready” small cell based Mobile Broadband technology in Newcastle and Bristol (England), which delivered internet speeds that were “three times faster than current 3G networks” (i.e. up to 90 Megabits per second).

Several reports have suggested that O2 UK and Vodafone are considering the possibility of re-purposing their existing 900MHz radio spectrum for use by the next generation of 4G superfast mobile broadband (LTE) technology, which could be used as a means of combatting EE’s new 4G via 1800MHz service (details). Easier said than done.
