4G Mobile Broadband Could Doom Public WiFi Wireless Internet Hotspots

Public WiFi hotspots have become increasingly common over the past few years and now even the government’s £150m Super-Connected Cities Programme (SCCP) is seeking to boost their coverage. But is such investment becoming a waste of money and might we be about to witness the end of public wifi as we know it.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has joined forces with Germany to develop the next generation of ultrafast 5G based Mobile Broadband technology, which will apparently only take “one second” to download an 800MB (MegaByte) film. In reality, it won’t be quite that fast.

Ofcom Shun WiFi Interference Fears to Prep 2.3GHz Auction for Mobile

The communications regulator has assessed the impact for both licensed and licence-exempt uses of the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands and found that the risk of interference with other services, such as WiFi (adjacent 2.4GHz band), did exist but wasn’t big enough to be worth worrying about.

Ofcom Begins Consultation on Future Spectrum for UK Mobile Broadband

The telecoms regulator has today launched an all-encompassing Mobile Data Strategy consultation that will attempt to identify and free-up a maximum of 881MHz in additional downlink radio spectrum (the 600MHz, 700MHz, 2.3GHz, 2.7GHz, 3.4GHz and 3.7GHz bands) for use by superfast 4G and future 5G style Mobile Broadband services.

Sometimes marketing can be misleading (e.g. calling FTTC or cable lines “fibre optic”) and the same could perhaps be said of 6G Internet, which has just launched a new wireless broadband network in Blackburn (Lancashire, England) and for added confusion fun they’re calling the technology “Air Fibre” (they’re not the first to use that).

Ofcom has revealed that the UK government’s £35 million+ investment to setup a 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey, which will be used to develop the next (5th) generation of ultrafast Mobile Broadband technology, is due to be completed by the start of 2015.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has warned that today’s move by Ofcom (here), which has created the “opportunity” for 10 new Freeview HD TV channels to be launched by using airwaves in the 600MHz radio spectrum band, could hinder the plan to free up existing 700MHz spectrum for use by future ultra-fast 5G based Mobile Broadband services.

Huawei Expect 5G Mobile Broadband to Give Everybody Speeds of 10Gbps

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has said that the next generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband technology, which it says should “emerge in the market between 2020 and 2030“, will ultimately allow “every person” to access wireless internet download speeds of 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) via their mobile operator.
