The annual NextGen Digital Challenge Awards were held last night in London, which saw rural FTTH ISP B4RN win the ‘Place Making Award‘ for their efforts in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Meanwhile Diva Telecom scooped the ‘Connected Britain Award‘ for their Eltofts village project.

Openreach has been criticised for a “criminal waste of taxpayers’ money” after their state aid supported roll-out of ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable FTTC broadband technology threatened to overbuild yet another one of B4RN’s community built 1Gbps FTTH/P networks, this time in Cumbria.

The B4RN for Casterton project has completed the primary roll-out of their 1Gbps community built and funded fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to the rural Cumbria village of Casterton and several surrounding areas, which was supported by £91,700 of local funding.

The B4RN inspired Fibre for Rural Nottinghamshire (F4RN) project, which is rolling out a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to houses in rural Fiskerton and Morton, has been disrupted by £1,000 worth of damage after several of their cable ducts were cut by vandals.

The plucky rural ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which has been deploying their 1Gbps community built and funded fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband network to remote homes in Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire, has now connected 3270 properties and is expanding into Suffolk and Norfolk.

The community funded and built 1Gbps B4RN Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network in rural parts of Lancashire, Cumbria and Yorkshire has received some extra support from the EU’s Digital Single Market team, which has published a couple of new videos on the project.

Residents of two rural villages – Leck (Lancashire) and Ingleton (North Yorkshire) – were left without access to B4RN’s 1Gbps community built Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network on Friday afternoon (2nd June @ around 4:30pm) after vandals dug up and cut one of their core cable ducts.

The community funded and built Fibre for Rural Nottinghamshire (F4RN) project, which has been inspired by B4RN and aims to cover the whole of rural Fiskerton and Morton with a 100Mbps+ Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, has completed its first roll-out phase and connected 83 customers.

The rural villages of Barbon and Middleton in Cumbria have today won a grant of £9,900 from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and its Sustainable Development Fund (SDF), which will be used to help B4RN roll-out a 1Gbps community-built FTTH network. JFDI.
