The Broadband For the Rural North (B4RN) scheme, which is attempting to deploy a new community funded and built fibre optic broadband (FTTH) network in parts of rural Lancashire (England, UK), faced an unexpected delay over Christmas after rodents nibbled their way through one of the operators fibre ducts.

The Broadband For the Rural North (B4RN) project, which aims to reach thousands of rural homes in Lancashire’s (England) Lower Lune Valley area with a 1Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable community funded and built Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network, has now connected the first 14 premises to its service.

One of the founders of Lancashire’s unique community-built and owned “hyper-fast” fibre optic (FTTH) rural broadband network, Chris Condor, has in our exclusive interview told ISPreview.co.uk that “fibre is the only technology worth investing time, effort and money in”. Condor also warned that the UK government’s current strategy wasn’t working.

The £1.86m B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) scheme has moved another step closer to launching its community-built and ultra-fast 1Gbps fibre optic broadband (FTTH) service, which will reach several villages across rural north Lancashire UK, after it signed a crucial capacity deal with Geo Networks (GEO).

The B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project, which is working to link thousands of rural homes in north Lancashire UK via a new non-profit and community built fibre optic (FTTH) broadband network, has now started to install its infrastructure into local premises and could go live “in the next few weeks“.

The UK governments somewhat embattled Secretary of State for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Jeremy Hunt MP, has surprisingly agreed to visit and “support” the B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project in northern Lancashire UK.

Just after midday today the B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project, which hopes to connect thousands of rural homes in north Lancashire UK via a unique “hyper-fast” 1Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable fibre optic (FTTH) broadband ISP network, will officially begin construction with a ceremonial “breaking of the sod” event (Jubilee Tower – 1pm).
