Infracapital-backed altnet broadband ISP Fibrus, which is building a gigabit-speed full fibre (FTTP) network across rural parts of Cumbria (England) and Northern Ireland, has today revealed that they’ve reached an additional 30,000 premises in Cumbria as part of their Project Gigabit contract in the region.
The vast majority of the operator’s FTTP coverage in the region has so far been delivered via commercial investment, although they also expect to add an additional 53,540 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas via their c.£150m publicly funded Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract in Cumbria (Lot 28). As of May 2025, the latter contract had already covered 12,500 premises and this has now reached 30,000.
This achievement – supported by delivery partner Viberoptix – is said to mean that Fibrus is now “ahead of schedule” to complete the government contract. The operator’s new full fibre network, which recently passed a take-up rate of 30% (here), currently covers over 450,000 UK premises; around 332,700 of those are in N.Ireland.

Telecoms Minister, Liz Lloyd, said:
“Good connectivity is essential for people to get on with their lives – whether that’s running a business, working from home, or staying in touch with loved ones. That’s why we are forging ahead with Project Gigabit, investing in upgrades to give even the hardest-to-reach communities in Cumbria access to fast, reliable broadband.
Today’s milestone is proof that progress is being made, even ahead of schedule. This is a government which is determined to give communities the connectivity they need to thrive in modern life.”
Jenny Lennon, Managing Director of Hyperfast Networks, said:
“Rolling out full fibre broadband across Cumbria has been one of the most challenging programmes we’ve delivered, so reaching this milestone under Project Gigabit as quickly as we have done is a significant achievement and demonstrates the scale of progress being made. This investment is already transforming digital infrastructure, bringing reliable full fibre connectivity to communities that were previously left behind.
With half of the project completed, we’re now focused on the next milestone and remain fully committed to delivering 99.9% full fibre broadband coverage across Cumbria – opening up new opportunities for business growth, supporting families to stay connected, and helping communities thrive in an increasingly digital world.”
New customers to the service currently pay from £24.99 per month for an unlimited 159Mbps (34Mbps upload) package with an included router and free installation, which rises to just £37.99 per month for their top 982Mbps (310Mbps upload) tier on a 24-month contract term.

Good to see a firm still fulfilling their contract, and not pulling out like some others.
