The May 2015 General Election is fast approaching and as a result we’ve been keen to canvas all of the major and some minor political parties in order to find out what they would do differently in terms of improving the national broadband connectivity landscape post-election. Today it’s the turn of the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats.

UPDATE BT to Help Lancashire UK Reach 99% Superfast Broadband Cover

The Lancashire County Council has once again picked BT to help extend the coverage of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) speeds from the current target of 97% (end of 2015) to 99% by around 2017, which will be conducted as part of the Government’s BDUK based Superfast Extension Programme.

The Kent and Medway councils in England appear to have quietly signed a second Broadband Delivery UK contract with BT, which will see the operator extend their FTTC/P based superfast broadband (24Mbps+) network beyond the existing coverage target of 91% by the end of 2015 (note: 95% will be covered by the “fibre broadband” footprint).

Telford and Wrekin Sign £5.6m Deal for 98% Superfast Broadband Cover

The Telford and Wrekin Council (Shropshire, England), after sitting out the first phase of the national Broadband Delivery UK plan, has signed a £5.6m contract with BT that will extend superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to reach 98% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2017.

Worcestershire UK Signs £6.2m BT Fibre Broadband Rollout Extension

The £21m Superfast Worcestershire (England) project has signed a second £6.2m Broadband Delivery UK contract with BT that will see the operator push their “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network out to reach an additional 8,000 homes and businesses (95% coverage) by Summer 2018.

BT Extends “Fibre Broadband” Rollout Contract with Emtelle to 2019

In an unsurprising move BT has agreed to extend their contract with the Scotland-based Emtelle Group, which manufactures cable duct (plastic piping that encases underground fibre optic cables) as well as sub-duct and blown fibre products at its two plants in Hawick and Jedburgh, for another four years until 2019.

Nothing New as Government Responds to EFRA UK Rural Broadband Report

The Government has today issued its official response to the recent Select Committee report for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, which called for a 10Mbps minimum broadband speed to be adopted and suggested a few other tweaks. But most of the official response merely echoes existing policy and last week’s Budget 2015 announcement.

Akamai has today published their latest global State of the Internet (SotI) report for Q4 2014, which reveals that average broadband download speeds in the United Kingdom increased slightly by 1.4% in the quarter to 10.9Mbps. The data suggests we’re now the 18th fastest in the world, which is up one place from Q3.

The Swindon Borough Council’s recently approved a £1.9m project with UKB Networks Ltd., which will push “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage out to 99.4% of local premises by 2016 via a fixed wireless 4G (LTE) network instead of BT’s fixed line hybrid-fibre (FTTC/P) infrastructure, is facing a challenge from rival politicians.
