Superfast Essex UK Project Begins Vague BT Fibre Broadband Rollout

The Superfast Essex scheme, which is worth £24.62 million and aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 87% of local homes and businesses by the end of summer 2016 (with plans to reach 95% through additional funding), has finally started Phase One of its deployment, albeit without telling locals which communities will benefit next or offering a clear timescale.

The Black Country Slowly Moving Forward with Fibre Broadband Rollout Plan

The Black Country (i.e. stems from a heritage of coal mining and heavy industrialisation), which represents Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton in England’s West Midlands, appears to finally be making progress with their Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) plan to make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services available to 95% of local premises by 2017. But a supplier still hasn’t been chosen.

Wales UK Superfast Broadband Rollout Project Reaches 135K Premises

The Superfast Cymru scheme, which is supported by public funding and aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network (speeds of up to 80Mbps) available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016, has now helped a total of 134,707 premises (most are homes and 4% businesses) in Wales to access the new connectivity.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IEF) will next week host a Rural Broadband Debate that will look at current government policy and propose a solution for bringing “reasonable” broadband access to the most remote communities at a “reasonable” price, which could involve combining technologies and greater mobile spectrum sharing between network operators.

Leicestershire UK Confirms First Areas to Get BT Fibre Broadband

The £18.6m state aid supported Superfast Leicestershire project in central England has this week named the first communities to benefit from the scheme, which ultimately aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 96% of local homes and businesses by March 2016.

Wales Seeks Feedback on Future Broadband Plan and Publish State Aid Map

The Welsh Government, as part of its work to identify areas of Wales which do not currently benefit from superfast broadband and won’t do so under the existing Superfast Cymru roll-out with BT, has launched a new online survey that seeks responses from suppliers, the Welsh public and businesses. The WG has also uploaded new state aid broadband coverage maps and postcode data.

UK Gov Spent £185K to Recruit New Broadband CEO and Project Managers

The Government’s Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) has revealed that a total of £184,591.50 was granted for a SofS approved recruitment campaign for new Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project managers and a CEO earlier this year, which is almost as much as the chosen CEO himself will be paid (£200k per annum).

Worcestershire and West Yorkshire UK Begin FTTC Broadband Rollouts

The state aid supported £20.75m Superfast Worcestershire and separate £21.96m Superfast West Yorkshire projects in England have today announced the start of their respective deployment phases, with the first local homes and businesses going live with BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services in each area.

More Norfolk UK Communities Confirmed for BT Superfast Broadband

The £41m Better Broadband for Norfolk scheme in England, which aims to make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network available to 80% of local homes and businesses by the end of 2015, has revealed the next batch of roll-out areas and confirmed that over 50,000 premises have already benefitted.

UK Broadband Strong in Latest EU 2014 Digital Agenda Scoreboard

The European Commission has today published the 2014 EU Broadband Scorecard, which reveals the United Kingdom’s progress toward Europe’s overall Digital Agenda goal of ensuring that 100% of homes have access to superfast broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ by 2020 (50% must also be taking 100Mbps+). The good news is we’re doing well but rural areas are still lagging.

£1m Grant to Help 3700 Extra Hampshire Premises to Get Fibre Broadband

The Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has awarded a grant worth £1 million to help make superfast broadband services available to an additional 1,700 homes and businesses in the New Forest and over 2,000 in the Test Valley (Hampshire, England).

Europe Softens State Aid Rules for Faster Broadband Deployments

As expected the European Commission (EC) has adopted a revised General Block Exemption Regulation (GBER) for the use of state aid (tax payers money) with regards to rolling out faster Next Generation Access (NGA) broadband networks, which among other things means that broadband funding under €70m (£57m) doesn’t have to be notified or approved by the EC.

Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire UK Broadband Rollout Update

The joint state aid supported £35.6 million project to roll-out BT’s “superfast broadband” (25Mbps+ FTTC/P) network to 91% of premises in Wiltshire by March 2016 and 94% of South Gloucestershire by the end of March 2015 has now helped to reach a total of 11,549 premises and more areas are due to be connected soon.

First Customers Benefit from Superfast Dorset FTTC Rollout with BT

The £31.75 million Superfast Dorset project in central southern England has today started to connect its first communities up to BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC) network in the villages of Charmouth and Wootton Fitzpaine, which combined represent around 400 local homes and businesses.

Shropshire UK Moots Ultrafast FTTH Broadband Alternative to BT FTTC

The Shropshire County Council in England, which recently warned (here) that it was struggling to find match-funding for the Government’s proposed allocation of an extra £11.38m to boost the local coverage of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC) services, looks as though it might be considering a rival county-wide deployment of ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) and wireless technology.

West Sussex UK Council Debates Superfast Broadband Funding Boost

The West Sussex County Council has started to debate an extension to their £20.1m West Sussex Better Connected project, which could put an extra £2-3m (total) or so towards helping to extend the reach of BT’s “superfast broadband” (FTTC/P) speeds to 95% of the region by 2017.

UK Superfast Broadband Rollout Brings BT Fibre to 508801 Premises

The Government’s national £1.2bn Broadband Delivery UK programme, which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband speeds of “greater than 24Mbps” available to around 90% of the population by the end of 2015 and 95% by 2017, has now expanded its coverage to 508,801 homes and businesses (premises passed).
