Rutland Target 15 New Areas as First BDUK Fibre Broadband Rollout Completes

The Rutland County Council in England appears to have almost completed the local £3m roll-out of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which would make it one of the first Broadband Delivery UK supported schemes to cross the finish line. Now another 15 villages are being targeted as part of a £180,000 extension programme.

UK Government Reduces Minimum Grant for Broadband Connection Vouchers

The Government’s Connection Vouchers scheme, which forms part of the £150m Urban Broadband Fund (“Super-Connected Cities“) to help SME businesses install superfast broadband (30Mbps+), has now completed its roll-out to all 22 cities across the United Kingdom and reduced the minimum voucher value.

A recent Freedom of Information (FoI) request, which was served upon the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), has managed to extract a full copy of some recent Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) guidance; this was issued to councils in order to encourage the release of better broadband coverage maps / data and clarify the approach for alternative ISP projects.

The Government’s national £1.2bn Broadband Delivery UK scheme, which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband speeds of “greater than 24Mbps” available to 95% of the population by 2017, has at the end of February 2014 passed around 370,000 homes and businesses. Meanwhile the DCMS Secretary of State, Maria Miller, has left the building and been replaced by Sajid Javid.

Worcestershire Expand UK Rural Broadband Project by 1400 Extra Premises

The Superfast Worcestershire project in England has announced that another 1,400 homes and businesses in the county will be able to get “high-speed fibre broadband” access thanks to an additional grant of £1,147,032 from the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme. However the money might not be coming directly from BDUK.

£775k Brings Superfast Broadband to 700 Extra Buckinghamshire UK Homes

The Buckinghamshire County Council in England has expanded its roll-out of BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network after an extra £775,000 was secured from the RCBF to cover 700 more homes in Cholesbury, St Leonards, Bellingdon and four villages north of Buckingham (Cholesbury Telephone Exchange).

The Prime Minister of the coalition Government, David Cameron, has joined recent calls from the Public Accounts Committee by demanding that BT “give more detail in their roll-out plans” so that rival ISP schemes can “see whether there are different ways of filling any gaps” in the planned broadband coverage.
