The Government has proposed a new £10 million scheme, which would be based off its existing Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, to help deploy superfast broadband services across 90% of South Yorkshire in England (most likely with BT’s help). The region suffered a £155m failure last year when the alternative Digital Region network collapsed.

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has published a new report that highlights the potential economic and infrastructure benefits to the broadband market of adopting any one of three alternative wayleave regimes, which might make it easier, faster and cheaper for ISPs and mobile operators to install new telecoms infrastructure.

The state aid supported Superfast Cymru project, which aims to make faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) speeds of up to 80Mbps available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016, has revealed a new list of communities that are scheduled to be enabled with BT’s new network by the end of March 2015.

The Government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey MP, will chair another round table event at Parliament on 14th January 2014 to discuss extending faster broadband Internet connectivity into rural areas. A key focus of the meeting is likely to be the new £10 million competitive fund.

The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) has allocated £8,782,191 to the Local Enterprise Partnership area of Greater Lincolnshire in England, which among other things could be used to fund small-scale renewable and broadband infrastructure improvements in rural areas.

The Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has announced plans to invest up to £7 million from the central UK Government’s New Homes Bonus scheme to help support the building of new housing projects by funding the construction of new community facilities or better broadband connectivity.

A new survey of 2,011 British citizens (aged 16-75) by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has reported that 43% saw more economic benefit in extending the reach of superfast broadband to all premises in the UK than they did from building new Nuclear Power plants, airports or high speed trains.

The Northmoor, Moreton and Bablockhythe Community Broadband Project in West Oxfordshire (England) has reportedly had its requested state aid funding of £200,287 from the Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) approved, although a supplier has yet to be confirmed.

BTOpenreach has announced the addition of 42 new “high-speed fibre broadband” telecoms engineers to serve areas including Exeter, Taunton, Plymouth, Bristol and Salisbury in England.

Leaders of the Hampshire County Council have voted to release £9.2 million to help extend their state aid supported roll-out of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services from its current target of 90% to 95%, which of course mirrors the new national UK target.

The total number of global broadband subscribers in Q3-2013 has grown by 1.8% in the quarter to reach 670 Million (up from just 0.7% added in Q2). But the data also reveals that the UK has a 132.1% annual growth rate for fibre optic based broadband (FTTC/P/H etc.) and that puts us top of the table.

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport has today confirmed all of the changes that have been made to its Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme since the autumn trial. The vouchers have been live since earlier this month (here), although there have been a few small changes under the hood.

The Government has flushed out a bit of new PR spin today by labelling the 18th December 2013 as “Super Switch on Day“, which apparently marks how the first BT Street Cabinets in a number of local Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) projects have finally gone live with “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services.

Several Greater Manchester authorities including Stockport, Bolton, Wigan, Bury, Tameside, Oldham, Trafford and Rochdale have signed a new £15 million deal that will see BT extend their “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to a further 39,000 local premises by the end of March 2016 (900k have already been passed).

The telecoms regulator has today published their annual 2013 International Communications Market Report (ICMR), which looks at the adoption, coverage and the uptake of broadband, phone, mobile, TV and radio services across 16 of the world’s major countries. The report found that the UK can hold its own against the heavy weights and consumer satisfaction with superfast broadband is very high.

The Scottish Government has this week launched a formal consultation for its new seven-year £1.3 billion+ Rural Development Programme (SRDP), which includes a vague proposal to spend an extra £9 million on broadband infrastructure in rural areas by 2020.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has slashed its prediction, which originally forecast that the United Kingdom would be home to just under 26m broadband lines at the end of 2016, by “almost” 8% to 23.88m due to the strain on disposable incomes and delays to the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) deployment of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) network.
