The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today begun a new consultation to help them identify what existing or planned commercial gigabit-capable broadband coverage exists in Essex (England), which will help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to deploy the service.

The Scottish Government‘s Connectivity Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, has given a progress update on their £579m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which is extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to the final 5-6% of poorly served premises (mostly via FTTP). The main focus was on voucher delays and the LOT 1 (Highlands) contract.

Ofcom has today published the outcome of their Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which sets out how various changes (Dark Fibre Access, copper retirement, regulation that varies by geographic area etc.) will be used to boost UK investment in “full fibre” broadband and high capacity Ethernet services.

Swedish operator VXFIBER (inc. subsidiary LilaConnect) will today announce the start of their multi-million pound project to deploy a new Dark Fibre and gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the large town of Colchester in Essex (England), which aims to cover c.25,000 premises.

Rural UK ISP Gigaclear has today issued a brief update on their progress to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Gloucestershire via the joint state aid supported Fastershire project, which also includes Herefordshire council.

The Ceredigion County Council (CCC) in Wales has published a list of rural communities that they say “could soon” gain access to a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP connection after a number of suppliers, backed by government voucher schemes, proposed tentative plans to deploy across them.

The Scottish Government (SG) has today named 15 islands under the contract for LOT 1 (North Scotland and the Highlands) of their £579m Reaching 100% (R100) project, supported by BT (Openreach), that will gain access to faster broadband ISP speeds via new subsea fibre optic links.

The Government’s £2.52bn Superfast Broadband Programme (SFBB) has so far helped to extend 24-30Mbps+ capable UK ISP networks to 5,327,128 extra premises since 2012 (up by 33.9K in H2 2020 vs 62.7K in H1 2020) – about 440,000 (our estimate) of these are FTTP – and take-up data to December 2020 shows strong demand.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme has today issued a progress update on their new Phase 2 contracts with ISPs Airband, Wessex Internet and Truespeed, which are worth a combined £80m (including £23.6m of public investment) and aim to improve broadband coverage to 56,396 premises (mostly rural areas).

Rural network operator Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) has announced that their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service has just been extended to connect homes around six more villages in Monmouthshire (South Wales) as part of a £2 million scheme.

CityFibre, which is currently working to deploy their 1Gbps FTTP broadband ISP network to cover 8 million UK premises over the next five years (here and here), has reportedly hired bankers at UBS and Rothschild to help it sell a significant minority stake (worth many hundreds of millions) to a third potential backer.

Angry locals in the Moray beauty spot of Finderne have setup an office in a cow field and invited the Scottish Government’s Connectivity Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, to come and try (suffer) working from it for a day. The stunt is designed to reflect frustrations over delays to the new voucher scheme and poor broadband.

The Chair of the cross-party DCMS Select Committee, Julian Knight, has criticised the UK Government for having “failed to answer” a key question in their recent report, which called for a detailed plan to show how it would deliver on its revised-down target for “gigabit-capable broadband.” The committee is now seeking a fuller response.

Residents in the rural village of Llanvaches near Newport (South Wales) will soon be able to benefit from a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network thanks to UK ISP Spectrum Internet, which is being part-funded by the Rural Gigabit Voucher Scheme. But Openreach’s rival state aid supported rollout isn’t far behind.

After a long wait the new Telecommunications Infrastructure (Leasehold Property) Bill is set to become law, albeit with a few changes, after passing through parliament. The law aims to make it quicker and cheaper for “gigabit-capable” ISPs to access big blocks of flats or apartments (MDU) when “rogue landlords” fail to respond.

The UK Chancellor, Rishi Sunak MP, has today published his Budget 2021 statement and sadly there were no new details for the £5bn UK Gigabit Broadband Programme. But we did get a few extra details on their recently confirmed plans for a new UK Infrastructure Bank, some of which had already been confirmed.

The Welsh Government has issued a Q4 2020 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 39,000 extra premises in rural Wales. The data to December 2020 shows 15,649 premises have now been completed.
