A new report from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has identified a “litany” of failures in the Government’s (DCMS) £5bn Gigabit Broadband Programme (F20), which it warns will result in “business and homes in rural areas” being “locked out of gigabit broadband for years to come.”

The latest independent study of UK broadband coverage for H2 2020 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 19.2% of premises (up from 14.8% in H1), while 37.4% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 22.1%) and 64.3% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 61.7%).

We thought it might be interesting to end 2020 by looking at how the United Kingdom’s position has changed since 2019, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband and mobile broadband (4G, 5G) speeds. Overall the UK jumped from 52nd to 42nd for mobile, while we fell from 45th to 47th for fixed lines.

Openreach (BT) has today announced the completion of their second and final contract phase under the state aid supported Connecting Cumbria (CC) project, which has now made “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP services available to nearly 95% of premises in the county (i.e. 127,000 extra homes and businesses).

The Connecting Devon and Somerset team will be hoping that the third time is a charm after they awarded £80m worth of contracts for Phase 2 of their delayed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) rollout project, which sees 6 LOTS being split between three suppliers (Airband, Truespeed and Wessex Internet).

A new project between the Angus Council, SmartRural and UK ISP Rapier Systems in Scotland looks set to help bring “high speed broadband” connectivity to some of the county’s remotest rural residences and businesses via a new gigabit-capable Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.

The DCMS Select Committee of cross-party MPs has today published the results of their inquiry into the Government’s £5bn pledge to ensure that 85%+ of the UK can access a “gigabit-capable” broadband service by 2025 and the role of 5G mobile. Unsurprisingly, they found significant concerns with deliverability.

The Government has today published the draft procurement strategy for their new £5bn Gigabit Broadband Programme (F20), which is a consultation on their plan to ensure that gigabit-capable networks reach a “minimum” of 85% UK coverage by the end of 2025 (before getting “as close to 100% as possible” thereafter).

The new Gigabit Take-Up Advisory Group (GigaTAG), which is led by paid consumer magazine Which? and various others (FSB, CBI, Ofcom etc.), has today published their first report that identifies a number of areas where improvements could be made to boost the take-up of 1Gbps capable broadband services in the UK.

Ofcom has published their annual Connection Nations infrastructure report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks now cover 18% of UK premises (up from 10% last year) and 27% are within reach of a “gigabit” (1Gbps+) service (7.9 million). Meanwhile geographic 4G cover is given as a range from 79% to 85%.

Broadband ISP Gigaclear has confirmed that more than 10,000 homes and businesses across West Oxfordshire (England) can now access their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which also reflects the near completion of their state aid funded contract with the West Oxfordshire District Council (WODC).

Several rural communities in mid Devon and west Somerset are gaining access to a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after UK ISP Technological teamed-up with the Government’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme and the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project on a £350,000 build.

A new report from EY has predicted that the United Kingdom will need to increase the pace of its existing “gigabit-capable broadband” rollout by 85% to 10,000+ premises passed per day in order to meet even the recently reduced 2025 coverage target. But a holistic, end-to-end approach, could help by boosting both supply and demand in tandem.

After a long delay the Scottish Government (SG) and BT (Openreach) have finally signed a rollout contract for LOT 1 (North Scotland and the Highlands) of the £579 million Reaching 100% (R100) project, which will see “superfast broadband” speeds of 30Mbps+ reaching many more rural premises (mostly via gigabit FTTP).

The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (NWEAB) has said that they’re making “major progress” on the £8m project to deploy a new gigabit speed Dark Fibre network in North Wales, which aims to connect 350 public sector sites across Denbighshire, Anglesey, Conwy, Gwynedd, Flintshire and Wrexham.

SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) has just connected the first 22 of 190 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings, education sites etc.) in Aberdeenshire (Scotland) to their new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network, which is being funded by £10.5 million from the UK Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme.
