Wales Infrastructure Report Wants Focus on Mobile, Not FTTP Broadband

The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has published a report that calls on the Welsh Government to “urgently establish” a Barrier Busting Taskforce to aid investment in broadband, but they also warn that “too much attention” has been paid to FTTP and “not enough” on improving Mobile Broadband (e.g. 5G).

Perth and Kinross Council Award £2m Local Full Fibre Contract

The Perth & Kinross Council in Scotland has awarded SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) the £2m contract to deploy a new 19km long gigabit-capable “full fibre” network in the area, which will help to “boost economic activity” and connect 31 locations (public sector sites) across the city region.

Digital Scotland’s Highlands Broadband Rollout Completes

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has today announced that their £146m “fibre broadband” roll-out contract with Openreach (BT) is “making its final connections“. The project has helped to deliver 6,500km of new fibre optic cable to improve broadband across 290 rural communities (benefiting over 193,000 extra premises).

Quickline Win £14.5m North Yorkshire UK Broadband Contract

Broadband ISP Quickline (part of Bigblu) has today won a fourth state aid supported UK rural broadband delivery contract, which is worth £14.5m and will see them extend their “fibre-backed fixed wireless” network to bring “superfast, ultrafast and in some cases gigabit speed broadband” to a further 15,830 premises in North Yorkshire.

Point Topic Predict 98% UK Gigabit Broadband Coverage by 2030

The latest Point Topic forecast of fixed gigabit broadband ISP network coverage for the United Kingdom, which considers both the future impact of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) and Cable (DOCSIS) networks, has predicted that they will reach 87.60% of premises by the end of 2025 and then 98.36% by 2030.

Ofcom UK Rules Out Cost-Based Prices for Full Fibre Until 2031 UPDATE

The CEO of Ofcom UK, Dame Melanie Dawes, today told the FTTH Council Europe that the regulator intends to give operators’ deploying “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks as much flexibility to build as possible and thus doesn’t “expect to introduce cost-based prices for fibre services until at least 2031.”

Germany, Poland and UK are Most Attractive for FTTP Investment

A new survey from law firm DLA Piper, which surveyed 62 senior executives at major investment and advisory firms for the “full fibre” sector, has found that 28% believe the ongoing pandemic has led to higher FTTP broadband rollout and more appetite from investors. Germany, the UK and Poland are the most attractive locations for this.

Concerns Grow Over Delays to Devon and Somerset Broadband

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project faced heavy criticism yesterday after UK Government MPs in the House of Commons highlighted on-going delays in awarding the new Phase 2 rollout contract(s), which aim to extend “superfast broadband” into more rural areas. Top 10 UK Fastest and Slowest Streets for Broadband Speed 2020

A new report has used data from 398,973 consumer speedtests to identify the top 10 fastest and slowest UK streets for broadband ISP download speed, which finds that Queens Road in Weybridge (Surrey) was the “slowest” on 0.12Mbps and Dale Lane in Appleton (Cheshire) is the fastest at 639.67Mbps. But there are caveats.

Q3 2020 Progress Update on Wales BT FTTP Broadband Rollout

The Welsh Government has issued a Q3 2020 progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 39,000 extra premises in rural Wales. The data to September 2020 shows 14,698 premises have now been completed.

Government Start £5bn UK Gigabit Broadband Plan for 85%+ by 2025 UPDATE

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has today published his 2020 Spending Review and in so doing has kicked off the new £5bn UK Gigabit Broadband Programme, which previously aimed to ensure that “every home” could access a 1Gbps capable connection by the end of 2025 but now expects a “minimum” of 85% coverage by that date.

GWS Finds Digital Divide in the UK from Slow Broadband Speeds

A new study by Global Wireless Solutions (GWS), which was conducted by Censuswide with 2,007 UK adults during September to early November 2020, has determined that only 64% of properties have a “decent broadband” (10Mbps+) service and a third (30%) are suffering from “inadequate throughputs” (i.e. sub-2Mbps speeds).

Broadway Partners Build FTTP Broadband into Rural Powys

Rural broadband builder Broadway Partners (aka – UK ISP Broadway Broadband) appears to have extended their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) rollout in Wales to include rural communities in parts of Powys, starting with the small villages of Llanafan Fawr (population of 470+) and Llanwrthwl (population of 190+).

Northern Ireland’s Department for the Economy (DfE) has today confirmed what we first revealed in September (here), which is that alternative network ISP Fibrus have secure the £165m Project Stratum contract and will be extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage to 76,000+ extra rural premises by March 2024.

Government Preps Universal Service Obligation for UK Mobile

The UK Government yesterday introduced new powers for the Secretary of State to, among other things, establish a new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for 4G or 5G mobile networks “in the future,” albeit only if that is “deemed necessary.” Questions will now be raised over what such a USO would look like.

Barry Forde – CEO of Pioneering Rural FTTP ISP B4RN to Retire

The founder and CEO of UK rural “full fibre” broadband ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), Barry Forde MBE, has this morning announced that he intends to retire by the end of this year. The provider’s Board is currently overseeing the ongoing process of appointing a successor.
