Rural focused UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that their existing deployment of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband technology in the Braintree District of Essex is to be extended into the local town of the same name. As a result the provider now expects to cover 20,000 premises in the area.

The Welsh Government has issued a progress update on their £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which is deploying a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover a further 39,000 premises. The data to June 2020 shows that 9,895 have so far been completed.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has warned MPs that at the current pace it will take until 2033 to achieve universal UK coverage of gigabit-capable broadband, or 2027 if some £9bn worth of cuts in tax (e.g. business rates) and red tape can be found. Considerably later than PM Boris Johnson’s target for 2025.

UK ISP Quickline, which is part of the Bigblu group, has today won another £8.1m contract that will see them extend their fibre optic fed Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network to cover a further 8,000 premises (homes and businesses) in rural parts of Lincolnshire with “superfast” (30Mbps+) and “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) broadband.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has announced that the Ex-BT CEO and former trade minister, Lord Ian Livingston, will lead a new “Telecoms Diversification Task Force” to help diversify the UK’s telecoms (mobile and broadband) supply chain and reduce reliance on high-risk vendors like Huawei.

The state aid supported Superfast Northamptonshire (SFN) project has announced that UK ISP Gigaclear’s current roll-out contract (Phase 3) has been extended, which will see the provider build their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 700 more rural premises than planned.

Research from the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) has claimed that 88.7% of the UK’s challenger alternative broadband network (AltNet) providers would support the creation of a common platform, through which they could provide wholesale services to third-party providers.

A joint £2.1m project between Openreach (BT), Buckinghamshire County Council and the Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) looks set to result in a further 270 businesses and 485 homes in the county’s most rural communities gaining access to a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Multiple credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the Northern Ireland Executive are set to announced that alternative network ISP Fibrus has beaten BT (Openreach) to be chosen as the main supplier for their £165m Project Stratum programme, which will extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage.

The UK Government has today announced that their Rural Gigabit Voucher scheme has been given a £22.2m top-up boost by a total of 17 local councils in England, which has increased the size of their vouchers and meant that more homes and businesses can now potentially get a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP network installed.

The Scottish Government (SG) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they expect to sign a contract with BT (Openreach) for the delivery of their much delayed LOT 1 area, which forms part of the £579m R100 (Reaching 100%) superfast broadband roll-out programme, “before the end of the calendar year.”

UK ISP Quickline, which is part of Bigblu group, has today secured a new £9.11 million contract that will see them deploy “superfast” (30Mbps+) and “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) capable fixed wireless and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband services to 6,700 extra premises across rural West Yorkshire and York.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has today echoed existing calls for the UK Government to setup a new “Infrastructure Bank” to help deliver on their planned expansion of “gigabit-capable” and “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband networks, as well as to support roads, railways and housing.

The Northumberland County Council look set to approve an investment of £537,000 via the Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which will help 18 additional primary schools in rural parts of the county to get an “ultrafast gigabit capable” broadband ISP connection installed.
